Match reports

Selsted v Norton

By Steven Green
18th June 2006

Catches do Indeed Win Matches!!

On Sunday Selsted entertained Norton Sports in Division 4 of the Kent Village League and were looking to make up for last week's defeat against a very strong Woodchurch side.

Winning the toss and batting first looked to be a mistake as the prolific Stuart Green went for 1 in the second over. However, this brought John Wright (72) to the crease and with Tony Kilbee (24) they put on 56 for the 2 wicket. Good bowling by Trevor Laslett (2 for 29) and Dale Pout (3 for 32) at one stage looked to de-rail Selsted's innings, but contributions throughout the team took Selsted past 200 with several players continuing their performances from the previous days' successful annual inter-club 6-a-side tournament. A sensible last wicket stand of 26 between Matt Johncock (23*) and Henry Haste saw Selsted set Norton a challenging target of 217 to win from their allotted 40 overs.

After an excellent tea made by Q Catering's Pete Arter, Norton Sports were contained by tight bowling from 17 year olds Matt Green (1 for 16) and the swing of Henry Haste (1 for 31) and excellent ground fielding resulting in a run out left Norton struggling at 43 for 3. With only Dale Pout (51) able to contend with the bowling before he was also run out, the Norton reply never threatened Selsted's total. It was therefore left to Selsted to try and claim the bowling point from the game. However, the excellent ground fielding was not matched in the air and several dropped chances denied Selsted the maximum 6 points from the game as Norton finished on 125 for 7.

A good all round batting performance set up the win to give Selsted 5 points from the game, but it could have been better if catches had been held. Next week sees Selsted play Goodnestone in the Lord's Ashford league on Saturday and Wootton and in a friendly on Sunday.
