This is a result the team will want to forget, they never got going and have now made it very hard for themselves to make it through the group stage of this cup. They will now have to win their remaining two games and hope that other results go their way. Welling started well and took the lead midway though the first half ,when a inswinging corner from the left beat a defender at the near post and found its way into the roof of the net. Gordon Reick had a shot from the edge of the area well saved by the Welling keeper 8 minutes before the break but that was about the best it got for the Fleet in the first half kicking into a strong wind. Fleets keeper Joe Dawson did well to save late in the half with a Welling striker through on goal , Danny Poynter was on hand to clear the rebound off the line. Gravesend went into the break lucky to just be the one goal down, it was hoped the second half would see the team come out with a bit more fire but it was still Welling who were playing the better football. Fleet made some changes in an effort to get some sort of hold on the game with Marcus Anderson being puched on into midfield. Fleet looked to have leveled when striker Ashley Dann made room inside the Welling area , he fired across the keeper with his shot heading for the far corner of the net but somehow the keeper got his finger tips to the ball pushing it onto the post. But it was Fleets keeper who had to be on his toes to keep his side in the game with two more fine saves. Karl Lucas was sent on to add some more attacking options to the Fleets midfield and he sent over a good swinging cross from the left which Matt Garner was just unable to control and get a shot on goal. With 15 minutes to go Welling scored their second of the game when Fleet cleared a right wing cross to the edge of the area but it fell nicely to the feet of a Welling midfielder who sent in a low shot into the net. Ashley dann was again unlucky in front of goal when he raced clear of the Welling defence and lefted his shot over the advancing keeper only to see it bounce up and hit the underside of the bar down onto the line and then cleared to safety.
