Embrace played to a packed out Leas Cliff Hall on Thursday October 7th. As it was the last gig of the first leg of their tour it promised to be an extra special evening and the audience wasn't left disappointed.
I was lucky enough to share a beer with the band beforehand and they seemed down to earth, despite their recent number one album. They were obviously very happy with their renewed success, which has earned them a new legion of fans (as evidenced by the range of ages in the crowd). The album is still selling very well and for the first time they are due to get a release in America.
Support was provided by Dogs Die In Hot Cars whose enthusiastic and energetic music has an almost retro feel. The guitars are complemented by the keyboardist's belting piano sound and Craig MacIntosh's vocals. The only possible complaint about their set is that is was much too short.
When Embrace themselves came on (to the sound of Louis Armstrong's 'It’s a Wonderful World'), their first set lasted about an hour. They played a good mix of new songs, such as 'Gravity' and 'Ashes', and old classics like 'All You Good Good People' and 'Come Back To What You Know'. The crowd reaction was good, singing along to the anthems and jumping up and down to the faster numbers.
The years of hard work showed through as Danny McNamara(vocals), Richard McNamara (guitar), Steve Firth (bass), Mike Heaton (drums) and Mickey Dale (keyboards) put in an excellent and polished performance, owning the stage. As the audience cheered, Danny announced that he had the best job in the world: "You can keep your astronaut or president, I want to be the lead singer of Embrace!"
An encore was a certainty and lasted about another half-hour. It included 'Wonder' and their cover of D12's 'How Come' (as originally heard on Jo Wiley's Radio 1 show) which is a huge improvement on the original, sounding like a completely different song. Hopefully the rumours are true and it will be the b-side to new single 'Ashes'.
As the encore drew to a close, Danny announced that it would be the last song unless everyone screamed really loudly. Sure enough the crowd responded and the band were soon back on to play two more songs. The second was 'Fireworks', a fitting end to the gig. The first was new song 'Even Smaller Stones' which is due to be on the next album and may even be a future single. It was the best song of the night and proves that despite the number one album, the best is yet to come.

I was at the gig and enjoyed it immensely. They were fantastic and a lot better than I could have imagined. I also thought the support act 'Dogs Die in Hot Cars' were great too. They are future stars for sure.

What a performance! A great night. They are very under-rated and deserve more credit for such great songs.
