Job Description
To gain an awareness of, and basic training in, the skills required for the operational roles in Radio Resources.
The Bursary placement will consist of a period of formal technical training, followed by operational experience. On completion of the training course the individual will be eligible to apply for internal vacancies within the BBC following the usual competitive process. If for whatever reason an individual is not able to secure work at the end of the training course there should be no expectation of further work or extension beyond the 6 month period.
Duties
Accountable to the Operations Manager/Teamleader, postholders will be required to perform duties, under supervision, in Radio Studios, Workshops and on Outside Broadcasts and other Location Recordings.
Range of work will include:-
- Attending a formal residential training course, comprising of written practical and Group exercises. Learning the basic skills required to balance straightforward speech and music programmes, working with colleagues. There will be an assessment at the end of the course and individuals who do not reach the required standard may not progress to the next stage of the traineeship.
- Assisting in the operation of studios and portable equipment. This will include the use of mixing desks as well as recording and replaying material.
- Editing of both speech and music will be required, often under pressure.
- File transfer and uploading of broadcast material using current audio file types and protocols. Scheduling programmes into playout systems.
- Assisting on outside broadcasts with rigging, de-rigging and operation of Audio Equipment, both within the OB vehicles and on the "stage" area, liaising with artists where necessary under the instruction of a Supervisor.

Required Knowledge and Experience
Although specialised technical training will be provided to enable Bursary Students to effectively carry out the role, post holders are required to demonstrate the following;
- Basic knowledge of digital audio fundamentals, either through formal training or equivalent experience
- Basic IT knowledge and practical use of computers preferably with formal training at higher education level or equivalent experience
- Ability to learn quickly when trained in Audio/technical skills
- An interest in radio, including the ability to recognise what makes "good radio"
- Awareness of the Health and Safety Risks involved in Studio operations, and when working on OB's. To follow BBC safety requirements and instructions and to report any accidents, dangerous situations or defects in safety arrangements
- Knowledge of the UK's diverse communities and the BBC's commitment to represent and reflect the whole UK audience in its output
