ST OUEN'S BAY
St Ouen's Bay
St Ouen's Bay

This bay has miles of sandy beach, with plenty of facilities. It is very exposed, which makes it popular with local surfers, but less so with sunbathers.

ST OUEN
parking: There are several car parks along the length of the bay, as well as roadside parking when they fill up.
refreshments: There are cafes, restaurants, pubs, ice-cream vans and beach kiosks all along the bay.
toilets: Several public toilets along the length of the bay.
swimming: Quite treacherous here because of rip tides and strong currents. Make sure you take notice of the flags and warning signs, and don't swim in the restricted areas.
sunshine: Catches the sun for most of the day.
shelter: Not very sheltered except when the wind is an easterly one. Even then only people right up by the sea wall will benefit.
sand: Fine and golden sand all along the beach.
beach sports: Surfing, windsurfing, sand yachting, kite flying, motor racing.

Lucy, you obviosuly have never been there! It's a top beach for surfers and most water sports, some great cafe's along the bay. Summer time this beach is packed and is great for watching the sun go down with a beach bbq and beers. Lucy...hope to never see you there!

FOR JULIE TAYLOR. BIG VERN'S IS FACEING THE SEA BEHIND DISCOVERY BAY APARTMENTS ALONG THE St.Ouen's ROAD THAT RUNS THE FULL LENGTH OF THE BAY. 30 SECS AFTER SPLASH OR 30 SECS BEFORE DEPENDING ON WHICH WAY YOU GO.

Julie Taylor
Heading back to Jersey 10 August - and on a MISSION to find Big Vern's. (Any more detailed directions welcomed - tried loads of times and never found it)Our other faves on Five Mile are La Pulente and El Tico.

mitch

I have a query! My husband and I have a booked a holiday in St.Ouen's Bay for 7 days in July. Can anyone give me information about the area, places to see, is it easy for driving, restaurants, etc?

*L*
In reply to Julie's question about where big Vern's is...drive past the splash so it is ony our left, and about 1 minute later there is a turning on your left which will lead to a big gravel car park and on your left is big verns...most fantastic place to have lunch outside in the summer....pure bliss!

sam gooch

Julie Taylor
Having just returned from my fourth trip to Jersey, I echo everything you all say about St Oen's bay - except that we couldn't find Big Vern's!! Can anybody tell us exactly where it is? We drove the length of Five Mile Rd several times and couldn't find it. By the way, can highly recommend La Pulente too - also El Tico for the best capuccino & cakes on the island.

Simone
Apologies Hywel, but that's actually not right, there are a few restaurants on that particular stretch. The Watersplash serves during the day (and resembles a scene out of Home and Away), La Pulente has a fantastic seafood menu and a lovely view of the bay, same for Ellies next door. Big Verns is certainly not your only restaurant! Also, there are coaches back into town and St Peter's at the end of a night in the Splash, if you check the back of the tickets you'll see the times that they leave... Having spent Saturday paddling, playing football, drinking cool beers and walking the entire stretch of the bay and back, it reaffirmed my belief that it is one of the most beautiful beaches I'll ever know. The sunset, the full moon... utter perfection! And for somewhere that looks so deserted (think the very opposite of Brighton beach on a hot summer's day!) there really is bundles to do, without fighting the crowds for your spot on the beach. Fanflippintastic.

Kay
As good as anywhere in the world!

MTRO Apeldoorn, Holland
I've got the perfect spot in the dunes to watch the romantic sunsets. It's sheltered, out of sight... Tip; Get a take away at the Pizza Express, St Brelades, get a good bottle of wine and last but not least, good company.... As long as the sun will set nicely, the rest will work itself out ;)

Ginnie, London:

One of the loveliest beaches I have ever
visited.

Mark:
Everyone and every thing got covered in oil which was in small amounts but seemed to be everywhere. Won't be rushing back there in a hurry!

Hywel, London
If you have two or three leisurely hours take an energentic walk from Plemont over the cliffs on a hot day with plenty of water in your bag and finish with the promise of a beer at Big Vern's - the only restarant on the whole stretch of glorious sand. Party types might end up at the Splash further on. A great sunset spot, but think about taxis home in good time!
