The Candidates

Springfield Stadium
Election 2005

St. Lawrence St. Lawrence

Find out about candidates standing in St. Lawrence.

SEATS  CANDIDATES POLLING STATION
Two Julian Corbet, Hugh Gill, Deidre Mezbourian, John le Fondre

Parish Hall

Why are you standing for Deputy?

JULIAN CORBET

I am a Jersey born, happily-married family man with three daughters, 16, 15 & 11. In common with most Jersey residents, both I and my wife work extemely hard to manage a large mortgage, high cost of living and rising tax demands. I feel that for too long "the average Jersey family" has gone unheard.

As a Jerseyman, I am very proud of our Island and extremely worried about its future for our generation and the next.

What's the most important issue for your district?
Following numerous conversations with parishioners, I share their concerns at the ongoing. unsuitable, over-large residential developments eroding our precious countryside and would seek more sympathetic and suitable designs.

CHIEF MINISTER:

HUGH GILL

I’m standing for deputy because after spending a year as Chief de Police in the parish I realised how hard the Constable has to work to service the parish and how much support he needs from the deputies.

Being on duty for one week a month as a Centenier was frustrating; I would rather work 4 weeks a month for the parish.

What's the most important issue for your district? The most important parish concerns are, apart from the general concerns of parishioners which have been inadequately addressed in recent years, over-development is by far the biggest concern especially in the south of the parish.

The Goose Green Marsh proposals are a mistake and should be returned to the States for reconsideration. Traffic, not only from a volume point of view, but in particular speeding is another serious problem which needs urgent attention.

CHIEF MINISTER: At the early stage of ministerial government it is important that the Chief Minister have appropriate and relevant experience in the management of a team.

I believe that Senator Syvret has done a magnificent job at Health but still has work to do there and needs time to further mature into a real leader, whereas Senator Walker has a business and management experience and has represented the island internationally, a role which will continue to be required.

DEIDRE MEZBOURIAN

I’m standing because I believe that the Island needs a broader representation in the States Chamber.

It must include men and women from all sorts of backgrounds, who are capable of meeting the challenges that are required of the position, be those challenges at Parish, or Island, level.

I have worked very closely for a number of years within St Lawrence, in a policing, social and cultural aspect and now feel confident that I have gained the skills, knowledge and understanding of the Parish system necessary to stand me in good stead to represent the Parishioners of St Lawrence as a Deputy in the States Chamber.

What's the most important issue for your district?
We are at risk of high-density development in the south of the Parish.
Although this provides the social housing required of all Parishes, it also impacts greatly on our infrastructure, environment and on the quality of life both for the new occupants and their neighbours.

These developments subsequently cause additional traffic problems; many areas are not safe for pedestrians or cyclists.

In other parts of the Parish, I have concerns about the lack of adequate public transport as in some areas there is no bus service at all.

Regretfully, in 2006, we still have areas of St Lawrence that are not connected to mains water.

CHIEF MINISTER: The place to make the decision of who to vote for as Chief Minister is in the States Chamber. If elected I will make an informed decision there, based on the information put forward by all candidates at the time.

JOHN LE FONDRE

I was approached last year by a number of parishioners and encouraged to stand in these elections. I have been interested in politics for some time, especially through both family background and my own involvement in various Parish projects and other honorary positions.

I am very proud to be a Jerseyman and I believe I can draw on my wide range of experiences (both on and off Island), my professional background, my leadership skills and my ability to solve problems to successfully represent St Lawrence as one of its Deputies.

What's the most important issue for your district?
Over development in the Parish, mostly in respect of the Dandara development near Sandybrook on St Peter's Valley, also Traffic (both volume and speed), as well as the proposed tax changes (ITIS, GST and 20/20)

CHIEF MINISTER: The debate over the position of Chief Minster has degenerated into an argument over personalities rather than issues.

If elected I will vote for the candidate who demonstrates the best experience, who can show an ability to consider issues rationally and unemotionally, and who has the ability to create and lead a team to serve this Island.
