in the Garden |
A botanical expert has described a rediscovered
Jersey garden as potentially one of the most important in Europe.
The lost garden in the grounds of the Chateau La Chaire Hotel at
Rozel was designed by a Victorian horticulturalist and included
tropical plants from around the world.
Walk around a woodland
It
was during a walk around what initially looked like a neglected
woodland that Angie Petkovic noticed that the area at La Chaire
wasn't quite what it seemed.
Following some research it soon became clear that
it was in fact a unique garden designed by the famous horticulturalist
Samuel Curtis.
Tony Russell visited
UK
Botanical Advisor Tony Russell was invited to visit the island to
see it for himself.
He
says it's an amazing find not just for the island but also in horticultural
terms as well.
Sixty
thousand pounds is now needed to carry out a feasibility survey
to look at whether it would be possible to restore the garden to
its former glory.
