New toys for West Centre cows

A carousel and a chess board have joined the benches and bronze cows in West Centre.

If you’ve found yourself walking through West Centre in Town recently then you may have noticed a few additions to the area.

As well as the bronze cow public sculptures that have become an essential ‘stop off’ for anyone with small children over the last few years – the area now boasts its own merry-go-round and large chess board.

The Constable of St Helier, Simon Crowcroft, has wanted to have chess available to people in West Centre for a while – helping to create more of a community space for shoppers, residents and people working in the area.

Well, in addition to the large chess board that will be out every day there is a carousel.

The carousel is locally owned and costs £1 per ride with a share of the profits going to local retailers who can then use that money to promote their business and the West Centre area in future.

The chess board will remain throughout the year (for as long as it stays dry enough to leave it out) but the carousel is only there for July and August – with a goal to bring it back for Christmas complete with lights.

The additions to the area have been done in partnership with local retailers and if these prove popular and successful more could be introduced in the future.

Town Centre Manager, Richard McKenzie, said he was “absolutely delighted” with the success after the first couple of days.
