MarathonYou are in: Jersey > Sport > Marathon > Wind, rain and a new course record Wind, rain and a new course recordDespite the wind, rain and high tides a new course record was set at this years Jersey Marathon. ![]() Fun run, relay, womens and mens race winners The weather was one of the biggest stories of the 2008 Standard Chartered Jersey Marathon but it was easily matched by the drive, determination and dedication of those taking part. Last year's winner Dr Andrew Hennessey also known as the Flying Doctor - shaved seven minutes of his personal best for the Jersey course, despite the strong winds and rain. This also meant a new course record for the Jersey Marathon – in what was, without a doubt, the worst conditions we’ve seen yet. Dr Hennessey’s set the new course record at 2:29:05. This is around seven minutes faster than his 2007 winning speed. Seconds after finishing, Andrew told BBC Jersey that keeping his average pace of five minutes 42 seconds per mile wasn't always easy. ![]() Dr Andrew Hennessey He explained that: "It was tough. I suffered from some stomach cramps and leg cramps around about 16 and 22 miles and had to stop on the side of the road. But I kept pushing through and had a little mantra - pain is inevitable, suffering is optional." In second place was Sean Milford, Ray Plant in third place. The 2006 winner Gary Payn came in fourth this year. The first lady across the finishing line was Jersey woman Jo Gorrod, a leading light of the local cross country scene but a newcomer to the Jersey marathon - her favourite distance was previously 3,000 meters. She came in at 2:58:14. Michelle Buckle, the ladies winner over the past two years was in second place this year with a time of 03:01:00. But it was also a marathon of personal bests for many taking part and pure endurance for many others.
