BBC Radio Jersey's Breakfast presenter John Uphoff has died in hospital at the age of 46. He had been in a coma for three weeks and had been diagnosed with a serious viral infection. His wife Jan was with him. For thousands of islanders John Uphoff was the man they woke up to. His no-nonsense approach to life, his desire to prick pomposity and mischievous sense of humour were the mainstay of his early morning double-act alongside Roger Bara. ![]() John was taken ill early in July He was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit in Jersey and then transferred to Southampton. He died in the care of the staff of the Neurological Intensive Care Unit in Southampton, to where he was airlifted two weeks ago. John was born in Bradford in 1961 and after being educated in the city, studied electronics at the local technical college. His broadcasting career began in 1978, when he became a presenter on a student radio station. He subsequently worked for the commercial broadcasters Pennine Radio and The Pulse in West Yorkshire, Viking Radio in Hull and Channel 103 here in Jersey. He joined BBC Jersey in 2002 to present the Saturday Show, taking on responsibility for the weekday morning show too, the following year. But it's been as BBC Jersey's Breakfast presenter, alongside Roger Bara, for more than a year that he'll be best remembered. Their unique take on life and unpredictable banter quickly became a mainstay for thousands of islanders every morning. Help playing audio/video John's funeral will take place in Jersey at a time to be announced. His passing leaves a great void in the lives of friends, colleagues and listeners alike. I feel so proud of you. Jacky------------------------- I was so sorry to hear about John's death at such a young age. He was a true professional and his sense of fun shone through whenever you talked to him. I never actually met him - but as a business reporter I spoke to him virtually every weekday morning "down the line." He never failed to be cheerful and interested in whatever we were discussing - and he made those early morning chats an enjoyable and relaxed experience. I will miss his friendly greetings and wry take on stories. My thoughts are with Jan and all at Radio Jersey. You've lost a lovely man and a very talented radio broadcaster. Karen Hoggan, BBC Business Unit------------------------- What a character! I used to listen to John and Roger in a morning via the wonders of the internet. I spent many evenings telling my husband the things that John had come out with. We were on holiday when I read on teletext that John had died. It was such a shock. Like so many other people I never knew him but felt as if I did. Still can't believe he's gone. Our condolences to Mrs U, Mr Darcey and his parents. Also to Roger and all at Radio Jersey. He'll be a hard act to follow. Carol and Family, Chirk, Wrexham, North Wales------------------------- Our sincerest condolances to Jan,family & all at BBC Radio Jersey. I had the pleasure of meeting him in the sudio a couple of times during the morning show when I was half of the Backman and Rubbin double act! I will allways remember the glint in the eye and the twitch of the lips before the coming out of another outragous comment. He was also very good at reminding people just how good a place Jersey is to live. It seems hard to believe that we wont hear his whit and charm over the airwaves again. The bongos may have fallen silent but great memories will carry on forever. God bless you broadcasting genius. RIP mate Rubbin.------------------------- John was a wonderful entertaining presenter every morning we would wonder what topics would get his views and comments, we enjoyed his everyday chat with Roger about everyday happenings, about Mrs U and Mrs B and felt we knew them even though we had never met. We can but guess at the turmoil you felt but you presented the show on the morning John's death was announced with true professionalism The Cowley Family - St Lawrence------------------------- My first introduction to the witof Mr John Uphoff was on Channel 103 I loved his sence of fun and satire when he left for Radio Jersey I followed I used to wonder how such an stiff necked BBC network was allowing this breath of fresh air to blow the cobwebs of 1930s Beeb away although I never had the privilege of meeting John I still felt as though we were great friends my wife and I have missed him over the passed few weeks and its left a void in our hearts the banter with co-host Roger Bara was fantastic he is I am sure starting up the first early morning radio show on the other side and will be making us all happy if we are lucky enough to join him God keep him and give joy to his wife and family in the knowlage of the joy and laughter he brought to all who new and listened to him God Bless Mrs U and Mr Darcy Roger and Marguerite ------------------------- To my friend "Jersey " Jan - something as tragic as this should never happen. Susan------------------------- The greatest tribute must surely be that, quite simply, John made us all smile! We need someone to be irreverent in this politically correct world and he managed that wonderfully. You could always imagine the twinkle in his eye. John gave us the best possible start to every day and we will all miss him so much. Rod and Jill Amy------------------------- John really brightened the newsroom and on the early shift was the only person to match my just-got-out-of-bed hair. I'll miss you so much. Fiona Macpherson------------------------- A radio natural, whose very natural banter helped ease you into the day. The island is poorer for his passing. Joe Pinto------------------------- I am very sorry to hear of John's death. I appreciated very much the fact that he got the best out of the people he was interviewing each morning (including my favourite weather presenters!). Even though I did not share some of his opinions, he made me realise that I agreed much more with Roger Bara than I had previously recognized! That in a funny way showed John's skills. Chris Anderson------------------------- Everything I want to say has already been said... We will miss John's unique broadcasting style and irreverent sense of humour, and his double act with Roger in the mornings was something to behold, causing much merriment with his politically-uncorrect comments. Deepest sympathy and sincere condolences to Mrs. U and the rest of John's family, to his colleagues at Radio Jersey, and to all his friends. John always made us feel we were his friends, and he will be sadly missed. Life is so unfair sometimes.......... Dave & Pat------------------------- So very sad to hear that John has died. His public loved him and we all hoped he would recover and be back on the radio with his happy chatter, he really brightened up the day with his nonsense and chirpy remarks. A very difficult time for Mrs U. and my love and best wishes go to her. rosie oconnor------------------------- Just to say how sorry we were to hear of John's death. Please pass our congratulations to Roger for the amazing way he coped with the news breaking in the middle of this morning's show. Please also remember John's parents. Geoff & Jenny Cornwall------------------------- As a regular listener to the breakfast programme I wanted to send a tribute but there is nothing I can say that hasn't already been said better by others. We would like to convey our most sincere condolenses to you all at BBC Radio Jersey and especially to Mrs Uphoff. Margery & Bernard Le Masurier, Jersey------------------------- Hi Roger and all at Radio Jersey, I use to roar with Laughter in spite of myself, how you managed to keep going without collapsing into hoots of laughter I will never know. I think it's called professionalism and the only thing I can say is you two were the Morcambe and Wise of Jersey Radio. I will miss the banter of you both because you were a team, and the impression I got was that you had a good friendship. I would have given my eye teeth to listen to you two when the 9 am news came on. Mrs. Uphoff will be just so sad for a long while and it doesn't go away it's just you learn to cope in a different way but she will have good friends who will be there for her and my advice is to use them that's what friendship is about. I am a Geordie and proud to be, as John was a Yorkshire man and very proud of his birthright and like all Northerners they think and say what they think and that in my opinion was what made John what he was and how he was. Thank you for giving me the chance give my little tribute Thank you John! and to Roger you have been (geordie accent please Roger) Sound hinny, yer alreet!! Geordieann.------------------------- I was a good mate of John's at Pennine Radio when he started his radio career at Pennine Radio in Bradford. Please pass on my condolances to his wife. Brian Cooke------------------------- So sorry to hear about John's death. I worked with him at Pennine FM in Yorkshire in the early 90s - in fact my first job in FM radio was as his studio assistant during pen & paper PRS and I came to see him and Jan a couple of times in Jersey. Charlie & Joan------------------------- so sad alan the seal------------------------- John will be sadly missed. Week mornings will never be the same again. My thoughs are with his wife and family and all at Radio Jersey at this very sad time. Ruth------------------------- Still can't believe this is true and am half expecting John to walk into the newsroom and demand to know what all the fuss is about. Fond memories of trying not to laugh at something John had said just before introducing one of my news bulletins. And John, you may even have converted me to Anthony Newley. Missing you fella Chris Rayner------------------------- I am proud to have worked with John, and I still remember his uniquely styled comic links, which made for compulsive listening on Viking Gold and its successors. I was looking forward to meeting up with him one day, some day. Another meal with John & Jan to look forward to? This has come as a complete shock tonight. My love to Jan, and to the many people who will remember John as a friend. Peter Fairhead------------------------- What a very sad day. Our thoughts are with Mrs U and family and of course Mr Darcy. Roger, what strength and professionalism you have shown today and our thoughts are also with you and your colleagues. John was special to us and so are you Roger keep up the good work Mick & Daryl Kent------------------------- My sympathy goes to John's family and friends . Can't beleive what has happened to him . I bet he has already put smiles on the faces of whoever he is now with . Thinking back at some of his rants I recalled the times when he would give a running commentary from the window , of the 'yummy mummies' trying to park their 4x4's in order to drop off the 'little darlings' to school . John you are quality . andy of St Clement------------------------- John, you will be missed, your early morning banter particularly in the last year made it worth getting up in the morning! I was devastated when I heard the sad news, please pass on my sincere condolences. Geoff Falk------------------------- He made me laugh and now this sad news has made me cry, what a great loss to us all - mornings are just not the same without him. Best wishes to Mrs U and all his colleagues at Radio Jersey. Avril------------------------- My most sincere sympathy to Mrs U, John's Dad, Mr Darcy and to Roger and all at the station. Roger you are an utter professional, I listened to the phone in my lunch break and could not believe how in control u were u must have been in pieces. I, like most listeners feel as if John is family. My heart goes out to u all and my hat is off to u Rog. Ally of Gorey------------------------- I was so sorry to hear this sad news. I often used to laugh out loud on my way to work in the mornings listening to John & Roger. My condolences to Mrs U and family and all at Radio Jersey Tracy Coombes------------------------- Although I didn't know John personally I feel that I have lost a friend - I woke every morning to his wicked sense of humour. My sincerest condolences to Mrs Uphoff and to all John's colleagues at BBC Radio Jersey especially Roger Bara - it must have been so difficult for you this morning. A song nhas just come on my CD REM "Everybody Hurts" just about sums up how we are all feeling today. Such a loss. Rest in peace dear John Maria------------------------- John always made me laugh first thing in the morning. what a way to start the day. He will be so sorely missed by so many people, my heartfelt sympathy to Mrs. U and her family and well done to you Roger for a first class programme, it couldn't have been easy today. My heart goes out to you all at Radio Jersey, John will be a hard act to follow. Anne - Trinity------------------------- Very difficult to say what has not already been said. John was a fantastic presenter with a very dry sense of humour which appealed to me especially the political banter and saying exactly how he interpreted a situation. our lives as well as Mrs Uphoff must have been so enriched in loving, knowing and listening to such a super star of the BBC.My Sympathy to Mrs Uphoff ,her family and the BBC on such a sad loss of life. Jacqueline Flath------------------------- This is tragic news may i pass my most sincere feelings for Johns family. I will really miss u John. My mum did interveiws with you and says she new you well I wish i new you as well as she did i wrote you a poem john Roses are red Helena------------------------- Why? I am sure that many are asking themselves the same question but we must comfort ourselves that he is now re-united with his beloved mother. Rest in peace John, I will miss all your cheeky banter and comical observations. Anne------------------------- Very sorry to hear about Johns death, every morning at 6 I used to wake up to him and Roger on the radio,he brightened up my morning with his quick wit and I really liked how he was so blunt and down to the point over everything ,mornings will not be the same!!! Andy and Laura------------------------- My deepest sympathy to Jan and everyone at the Station. The unique closeness at BBC Jersey means that you have not just lost a colleague but a friend. I will always remember him for his ability to make so many people laugh and cringe at the same time. He would feebly argue that he just doesn't know where the line is, even though the line is just a dot in the horizon. An amazing man to know, who will be greatly missed. Nick Azern------------------------- I was so shocked and saddened to hear that John had passed away. We used to work together at BBC Jersey, and he was a total 'one off'. He still sent me jokes by email regularly, now I am back in London. RIP John. Elizabeth Gould------------------------- what do i say john,we never meet but i knew you your humour helped me into the world each day.my sincere sorrow to your family terrel terry------------------------- It all seems to have been said already, but I want to add my thoughts too. I never met John, despite being down at Radio Jersey so many times. But I felt he was a friend, especially when he poked very gentle fun at me and my emails! But he always said such warm things about my Morning Thoughts when they were broadcast. John was a free spirit, and one Jersey will not forget. My prayers are for him, his family and all his friends at Radio Jersey. John, you are at peace now, in a better place. ALYSON St Helier------------------------- good bye legend will miss your wit Dave------------------------- Shocked to hear the news about John - still can't believe it. That man will be greatly missed. I will always remember being late for a show as I'd forgotten the clocks had gone forward an hour - John made sure I was reprimanded by hitting me with a clock live on the air as soon as I eventually arrived in - have never missed a show since. You'll be greatly missed my friend. Spencer Davies------------------------- To Mrs Uphoff and to to all at the BBC, I want to say how shocked I was to follow John's short illness and death. I was in the studio often on a morning, being asked about something. I cannot remember many of the details but he was a perceptive and fair interviewer. He was also a very funny broadcaster. He had this instant sense of humour that spotted a gag coming up. One morning, he was doing What's on Where and John had to announce that the Jersey Agorophobia Society planned meeting for that night was cancelled. He quipped straight away; "Probably because they don't want to go out". That still makes me laugh. He used to sail close to the wind, but everyone loved his humour. The morning show will go on. I shall miss the dulcid tones of John Uphoff broadcasting out over the Island. May he Rest in Peace. Sean Power------------------------- We were very sad to hear of the death of John today. Our sincere condolences go to Mrs U, to Roger and his colleagues at Radio Jersey and to all his friends and family. He will be greatly missed. How we would laugh at the banter on the radio each morning as we prepared to leave for work. It put a smile on our faces and helped us to face another day. Greg & Jenny------------------------- john converted me to radio jersey just by being 'John', one morning show and i was hooked! so so sad for all who started each day with you. Deepest sympathy to the family angie (of st helier)------------------------- I listened to John and Roger every morning and it won't be the same without John now. He will be a great loss. Audrey------------------------- My heart goes out to Mrs U, the rest of John's family and all of his many, many friends. I didn't know John but he was so warm and welcoming when he did a live interview with me at Radio Jersey. Jane------------------------- I didn't think I could feel so so sad about someone I had never met - although I felt, as many others, that I did know John Uphof and he was my radio friend. Will miss him with Roger in the mornings so much. Norah, listener from St Ouen------------------------- We were so sorry to hear the news of Johns death. Please pass our condolences to Mrs U and family. The mornings will no longer be the same without John Elizabeth & Graeme------------------------- We were all shocked and saddened to hear of John's passing today. Our sincerest condolences go to his family and friends. John was such an enthusiastic character and a great journalist with a brilliant sense of humour. He will be missed by many! Jim Hopley, Allan Smith and all his friends at the Channel Islands Co-operative Society Limited------------------------- Politically incorrect, irreverant, funny, extremely witty, master of the apt phrase - how will we face the day without the banter, the remarks that made us take a deep breath and say -he can't say that on air can he? But he could and did. We all thought we knew him so well. Our thoughts and condolences go to everyone who knew him and worked with him, especially to Roger, Mrs U and Mr Darcy. Gill & Bill------------------------- I remember having a laugh with John in the Radio Jersey newsroom when I used to work there before school and also enjoying a glass of wine with him after last year's Battle of Flowers. He was a really fun guy who will be sadly missed. My condolences to you all. Anthony Dearie------------------------- So sorry to hear about Johns death, listened to you both every morning in France. My thoughts go out to Mrs.U. Your presentation this morning was impeccable Roger. Thinking of you all. God Bless. Marjorie Abbott------------------------- We are so sad about John's passing. We woke everyday to hearing his and Rog's voice and loved the banter between you, especially conducting the 'big tune' Lots of prayers. Keep your spirits up Rog, John will be listening I am sure. Love and prayers to Mrs. U. Kate, St Clement------------------------- I shall miss John's politically non correct humour over my cup of tea in the mornings. Do you remember the incident with the fallen tree ? Classic. Guy------------------------- I'm devastated by the news, we were part of a brilliant and unique team at Viking radio & Classic Gold and he is a huge huge loss to the industry. Please pass my love to Jan, he will be sadly missed Chris Bell------------------------- I only knew John via the radio but feel as if one of my own family has died, such was the impact this man had.I hpoe his family & colleagues take comfort from the fact that this guy was one of lifes' characters & will be muched missed but never forgotten Angela------------------------- John was my next door neighbour for three years. We shared a rather large hedge and a reluctance trim it ! He of course loved both our small dogs and made a great fuss of them everytime their paths crossed. Recently, he responded willingly to broadcast one of the dogs dissapearance which led to a swift capture. Never before has a missing dog feature been up next to world affairs, my kids still talk about it, thats the sort of thing John did. Thinking of you Jan. Andrew & Tania & Daniel & Emily & Rosie & Coco------------------------- Devastated to hear of John's death your early morning show made my day, he always managed to say what we were thinking but afraid to say!! He will be sadly missed. Sincere condolences to Mrs U and all at Radio Jersey. Gerry------------------------- For John's Family and Friend's Tish------------------------- So very sad to hear about John. Him and Roger made me laugh in the morning when my alarm went off. Roger you will have to keep your spirits up for Johns sake. My condolances to Mrs Uphoff at this very sad time. He brough light to everyone who heard him on the radio Ann Marie------------------------- I remember John as the true professional behind the mic. When he joined Channel 103, he seemed to be the most unlikely candidate. Quiet, almost shy, very unassuming, you wouldn’t notice him when in a room full of some of the other lively boisterous members of staff. But when he got in the studio and turned on the microphone, it seemed effortless. He was brilliant, he knew his music, he had perfect timing, he was the one who could teach these rookies a thing or two. He had patter, he made us laugh. Out of the studio, it was him and me who maintained the air of calm and sense when all around us was chaotic and frazzled, with madcap activity and crazy antics. I like to think we were there to provide the balance. We lost touch when I left to go to the Jersey Evening Post, but I felt like I knew him better than ever – as I’m sure thousands of others do – in the way we have come to love him in the mornings with Roger Bara on BBC Radio Jersey. His irreverent non-politically correct attitude was superb. He obviously gained many new fans in this morning slot. He always knew what he was talking about, he always sounded like he was interested. He made sense. He made us laugh. His passing is a very sad loss to the Jersey media, and Radio Jersey in particular. He was a true professional. Caroline Leonard, Former News Editor, Channel 103------------------------- So sorry to hear of John's untimely death he was a good friend and colleaque when I was with him at Classic Gold in Hull back in the 80's I was still in touch by phone and e-mail over the years with him, many people in and out of the radio world are going to miss him… Pat Gibson------------------------- Such a sad loss, a wonderful man who helped me smile during my time in Jersey. Hopefully John's memory will make people smile as they remember him. Much love to Jan & family Wanda & Nigel Sampson.------------------------- So sad to hear the news today, I will miss him dearly. I can't believe there will be no more vital vinyl and who is Matthew going to roll his eyes at now? John had a big heart, was a brilliant broadcaster and a pleasure to work with. Please pass on my love and sympathy to Jan and to all of you. Jo Sokill------------------------- I remember when i first heard John on Radio Jersey in the morning. And at the time I thought, mmm hes a bit brash,we in Jersey were not used that kind of presenter. It took a few weeks for him to grow on my ears, but grow he did, for I realised he was a man, who who like me called a spade a spade, and definitely not a shovel! The refreshing way he had of telling us exactly what he thought of our politicians, and the shennanigans they got up to, is probably one of the most endearing things about him that we islanders liked and took to him. My condolences to his wife, whom he loved to call Mrs U, many thoughts are with her at this desolate time. The only words of comfort are that, timeless as the saying is,time helps to ease the pain. Got bless and be with you, Mrs U. Freda Ruderham------------------------- Please can I join the thousands to say how sorry I was to hear of John's passing and ask you pass my sympathy to Jan and all who knew John - his humour was exceptional !!! Can I also say how professional you and all at the BBC have been this morning This must have been the worst and most difficult day of your presenting career. Chris Ollerenshaw------------------------- Really sorry to hear your news. Clearly you've lost a much-loved radio treasure and colleague. I am sure you have a difficult time ahead but you will do the best for your team. All the best Mark Hellings, Assistant Editor BBC Hereford & Worcester------------------------- John was always so easy to talk to, and be interviewed by. His jokes were so outrageous that you couldn't but enjoy them. The morning programme will never be the same. My sincere condolences to Mrs. U and all the team at Radio Jersey. Ken Vibert------------------------- Just a little note to say how saddened everyone at SoJP was this morning to hear of John's death. I know that everyone who went into the studio nervous came out smiling after an interview with John, and he was, quite simply, a great character. No doubt you will have a lot of messages saying the same thing today. He was highly thought of with a unique style and he'll be greatly missed. With all good wishes Louise Journeaux------------------------- It was with great sadness that I learnt of John's death a few moments ago. Over the last year, like thousands of islanders and colleagues, I had grown to enjoy John's morning show. As I learnt of the news of his illness, I had spoken to many friends and colleagues about him. Many people expressed genuine concern at his illness and wished him well. Having been interviewed by him on many occasions, I must say he was always fair. He didn't suffer fools and usually got to the piercing heart of the issue in hand. As a politician with a job to do, I rarely could argue with his balance. At the same time his approach was refreshingly unpolitical! I admired his ability to move from the serious (and boring) to the light-hearted and vice-versa. Whilst I didn't know him at all well personally, like many I felt I did. One issue was that I did know he lost his mother. I remember well, the clearly difficult time he had when she was ill and felt great empathy for him when he had to continue with his duties as a broadcaster after her sad dealt. He was always professional and I respected that very much. His departure is a great loss to Jersey and broadcasting. The loss of someone so young is an even bigger grievous loss. I am sure you all feel devastated, My thoughts are with you and John's family at this time. If it is appropriate to say it: grief is the price we pay for friendship and love. I hope the grief you feel, will turn to happy memories, of a much respected, funny broadcaster. Moreover, of someone with wisdom and sound good hearted adopted Jerseyman. May he rest in peace. Philip Ozouf------------------------- I heard your tribute to John this morning and thought it was lovely. Hearing clips of him again, on air and enjoying himself doing what he loved brought a lump to my throat. Rog has been awesome too, his chair is a tough place to be this morning and I think he got the balance of sensitivity and professionalism spot on. I know John adored his time at the beeb, he used to frequently say how amazed he was at being allowed to say half the things he did, and loved the attitude of "easier to ask forgiveness than permission!" I think the BBC allowed him to become the talent he was. I don't think he'd believe quite how many people are going to miss him… Matt Howells, Former 103 Presenter------------------------- How terribly sad. Underneath all that bluster was an old-fashioned gentleman with old-fashioned standards, and I'll miss that. Thank you to Roger for breaking the news so gently this morning and all my sympathy to John's family. How would they like us to express our love of John and grief at his passing? Jacky------------------------- His sense of humour will be sadly missed, it used to keep me amused and cheerful on the morning run into town. A great lost to BBC Radio Jersey, his family and listeners alike. What no Christmas Lights on his house this year. Bob in St Brelades------------------------- Although we never met him we both had a tear in our eyes when we heard this morning that John had passed away. A brilliant presenter who often left us gasping with his 'no holds barred' comments but always managed to make us laugh at his cheek. Our thoughts are with you all and with his family. God Bless you John. Ron & Hilary Backhouse------------------------- All at Image wish to send their condolences to the BBC team, friends and family today. John Uphoff has been a delight to listen to and his absence will be felt island wide. The tribute that you broadcast this morning was a fitting reminder of what a great presenter and person he was. We know it will be a difficult day for you all Natasha Egre------------------------- Please will you convey to all your colleagues at BBC Jersey the assurance of my prayers for you all at this difficult time. It must feel like a death in the family. As I said to you yesterday, I always enjoyed being interviewed by John. He asked searching questions but then really listened to the answers and I always felt that, providing you knew what you were talking about, you would get a fair hearing from John and he would enable you to put your point over on air. He is a great credit to BBC Jersey and will be very much missed. I guess many who simply listened to the programme felt that they knew him and to be able to share who you are across the Island is a great gift. We will certainly be remembering Jan and the BBC staff in our prayers and in the churches of the Island on Sunday. Very Revd Bob Key, Anglican Dean of Jersey------------------------- I am shocked this morning to hear the very sad news that John has passed away and I extend my sincere sympathy to all of you at the station. John was one of life’s gentlemen and he will be sadly missed by all of us fortunate enough to have made his acquaintance either personally or professionally. Christine Holmes------------------------- My deepest condolences to you all. I am in no doubt as to the great saddness you must all be feeling there and to how much you will all miss John. Giulia Mausolle, Channel 103------------------------- I worked with John for some years and have the most wonderful memories of John, Anthony Lewis and I at Channel 103. John would ask us what we thought of a track, while he was head of music. Ant and I would shout our disapproval or approval at him, often bullying him into submission or suffer his complete refusal to accept our recommendations. Now at Durrell, John has been the hardest convert to our new name – Durrell – and gave us a real run for our money. Finally, he found his niche on the breakfast show with Roger and was brilliant at keeping Jersey politics on its toes. I will miss his cheeky dulcet tones in the morning and will miss his whit and naughtiness on a personal front, terribly. Much love to you all and particularly to Jan. Caron Glover, Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust------------------------- My thoughts are with you all - it must be very sad to lose somebody who was such a big part of the station. Karen Hoggan, BBC Business Unit------------------------- Although I hardly knew John (just a studio interview many moons ago re Jersey Clipper) I, along with many thousands of Islanders, felt I knew him quite well through his early morning double-acts with both Roger and yourself. It made compulsive listening over the cornflakes, making us laugh out loud and also, on more than one occasion, wondering 'how on earth does he get away with saying that on air at this time of the morning?'! He was great fun and will be sadly missed. Our thoughts are with his wife and family, and also with you and your colleagues, at this very sad time. Philip & Dena Jeune------------------------- Can I pass on sincere condolences from your colleagues in Guernsey following the very sad news of John's death. Listening to a little of Jersey Today this morning it was clear he was a much loved broadcaster and friend. Best wishes to you all at this difficult time. David Martin, Editor BBC Guernsey------------------------- I'm sure you're extremely busy. I just wanted to send my condolences following this morning's news. John was someone I admired and very much respected. Sarah Moorhouse, Channel Television------------------------- What can I say? I'm so very sorry to hear the dreadful news about John, and would just like to add my condolences to the flood of messages you're no doubt receiving. It was always a pleasure to be interviewed by him - he had a knack for asking the right and pertinent questions - and he made my early morning, half-asleep contributions an easy matter. Do please pass on my sincere condolences to John's family and to everyone else at BBC Radio Jersey. Adrian Lee, University of Plymouth------------------------- Just wanted to say how sad I was to hear the news this morning. On the odd occasions when I saw you all together it seemed that you were like the four musketeers with so much laughter, in-jokes and so entirely comfortable as a quartet of articulate veteran radio men enjoying the events of the day and relishing the morrow, I can only guess at how much you must be missing him. He was an unusual mix our John I thought, possibly unique, He could cut you down in a word but astound with his unexpected generosity or complete sympathy. As a bluff Yorkshire man who suffered few fools and had no truck with sentiment he amazed me once by sending an e-mail during my show saying that he'd had to stop on the way home to cry at a record being played. I didn't know him well but like you all I will miss him, much sympathy and please give my love to Jan. Ted Reynolds------------------------- I am so sorry to hear this. Mark Byford, BBC Deputy Director General------------------------- Jill and I were saddened to hear of the passing of John this morning. His irreverent humour and unique talents will be sorely missed. Thank you so much John for the hours of entertainment, enjoyment and fun over the years. We never knew what you were going to say next, but were always sure that it would be worth hearing! Our heartfelt sympathy, thoughts and prayers go to Jan and the family. Rest in peace. Alan and Jill Higginbotham------------------------- Sorry to hear the sad news about John. A light has gone out on a lovely person. Matthew------------------------- We just wanted to say how sad we all are here to learn that John had passed away. He was so supportive of Headway Jersey (as you are) and we will miss him so much especially his marvellous sense of humour All our thoughts are with his family and all the staff at Radio Jersey Judy Ridley------------------------- What a terribly sad day this is, we have lost a wonderful presenter who became a friend to all his listeners, John never failed to make me giggle.Love and prayers to all John's family and collegues, especially Roger. Sue in St. Helier------------------------- A oneoff. He had that ability to point out the ridiculous ,see the pomposity which lurks beneath the surface of some of us ! and push the boundaries. An antidote in an increasingly bland world. A great loss . Roy Le Herissier------------------------- John will be sadly missed by many people in the faith communities. He was as most people know a self confessed atheist but you could be assured that when you were interviewed by John you would be asked serious questions that are in the minds of many people. He would from time to time, when on line shock the sensitive believer but I never found him other than open to what as a Christian minister and church leader I had to say. The family and friends of John are in the thoughts and prayers of the Methodist people in Jersey and in his home town of Bradford where his father Eric plays the organ in a local Methodist Church. Rev David Coote Leader of Methodist Church in the Island------------------------- John used to brighten our morning with his mischievous sense of humour, he was a great character, and will be sadly missed by all. Please pass on our condolences to Mrs U at this very sad time. Maureen and Alan English------------------------- It is with great sadness that I write this to pass on my thoughts to you all at this very sad time. There are no words that can begin to heal how you are all feeling at present. All I can say is what a very funny man and I will always have fond memories of the banter between him and Roger on air, definitely brightened up my mornings. I will never forget his comments about slapping my thigh in panto either. A great man who will be missed by all. Please know that I am thinking of you all at this time and send all my love, hugs and best wishes to you. Stay strong and remember the good times x Christa Roberts------------------------- Heartfelt condolences to Mrs U and all of John's colleagues. A brilliant presenter who will be sorely missed. From all at Mulberry Estate------------------------- John, you've left us far too soon. I will remember our anoraky banter (on air and off!) and your frequent attempts to extract office gossip from me (usually with plenty of success). I also remember with much fondness coming to visit you and Jan in the caravan. Carry on being the cheery one, wherever you are. John B------------------------- The thoughts of all the staff here at Channel Television are with John's family and colleagues. We were shocked to hear of the loss of such a popular island broadcaster. John's unique approach to news stories was both refreshing and entertaining. Russell Hookey------------------------- We are so sorry to hear about John, our thoughts and prayers are with you and the rest of the team at this very sad time. I know it must have been of late, and will continue to be, a very tough time for you all when the show must go on. I am sure he was a larger than life character to work with, so you all, and the listeners, I am sure will miss him terribly. Jennifer Ellenger------------------------- With sympathy to Mrs U and the dog. John will be missed - by far the best thing in the morning along with his pal Barra. His cheekiness, (marginal) political incorrectness and "call a spade a spade" mannerism was so refreshing, and he got away with it all which goes to show how talented he was! Roger, you did John proud this morning and my hat goes off to you for keeping it together in what must have been your most difficult broadcast. Rest in peace John. Adrian------------------------- Saturdays have never been the same since I stopped sharing my Lynsey Let Loose adventures with John. I loved working with him and he always made me smile, particularly when he was being a difficult, grumpy old sod! Crazy studio dancing with Gramps and the fun he poked at me made working with him so brilliant; eventful, memorable and unique. A very special guy who never believed how great he was, John was BBC Radio Jersey, living and breathing it - tuning in to every show, even when on holiday! He picked me up when I was low and pushed me on and was a true radio genuis to learn from. John, you'll be close in our hearts always and will never be forgotten - nor will your pork pie, mushy peas and microwave burger breakfasts! Lyns------------------------- I know that John will be sadly missed by many of us I wish to send my condolences to Mrs U and to his BBC colleagues God Bless John Yvonne Pilgrm------------------------- Oh no, John is gone. Sincerest and deepest sympathy to Jan, John's family and all at Radio Jersey. I am only an avid listener of your station and have already missed listening to the Uphoff and the Rodge going head to head with differing opinions, but always hung on to the hope John would return, no matter how long it took. A great talent will be very much missed. Love to all, Jane. xx Jane De La Haye------------------------- I am so sorry to hear about the death of John Uphoff, he brightened my mornings and was a Facebook Friend. I loved his alternative style and his banter with Roger. My sympathies go to Mrs U and all at the BBC Kay Viney------------------------- I am so sorry to hear the devastating news today of John's death,I feel like we have lost a dear firend. Our hearts are with Mrs U and his family at this sad time not forgetting Mr Darcy. Ellie------------------------- I'll never forget John warning people on the eve of bonfire night "look out for those hedgehogs under the bonfires... you don't want them overcooked"! His cavalier approach and comic timing will be very sadly missed. Michael Johnson, London------------------------- We would just like to say how saddened we are to hear of John's death this morning. Cathy, Katie, Moya, Claire and Alan (States of Jersey Communications Unit)------------------------- Just heard the news and terribly shocked. Knew John (and Jan) from when he first came to the island to work on Eclipse FM, with Peter Mac and the rest of the 'gang'. He was always great fun and we had many an evening discussing radio and other less important matters over a glass of ale surrounded by his and Jan's cats! Spencer Pryor------------------------- We are very sad to hear that John has died, he was part of our lives on our visits to Jersey, and later at home via the Internet, we will miss his wit and humour and good choice in music. Our very sincere condolances to his family and friends. Pat and Graham. Iver. Bucks------------------------- I'm so sorry to hear the news about John. I got a call first thing this morning, and I've been in tears ever since. I can only imagine the loss that you all are feeling at the moment, and I send my thoughts to all of you at this difficult time. I first met John at Pennine when we worked together in the late 80s, and we became firm friends. He then embarked on the Jersey excursions to get the commercial station, and we always kept in touch and visited each other (I think my Aunt in St Martin got annoyed that we'd arrange to come over and stay with her, but in fact spend all our time with John and Jan!). Jeremy------------------------- So sorry to hear the very sad news this morning. Please pass our deepest sympathy to his family. He always made us laugh. David and Ruth------------------------- Although I didn't know you I listened every morning you always called a spade a spade made me alway laugh. God bless and keep you always with him. So sorry Jan and all your colleages Sheila (Trinity)------------------------- I was devastated when I heard the news of John's death. I prayed he would make a miraculous recovery. Roger Bara was so professional and held it together really well, I can only imagine how he must be feeling. I could not of presented the morning show without blubbering! Please send my deepest sympathy to John's family at this sad time. I really hope John's dog is going to be alright-they were best friends. SAA (Shy dedicated listener)------------------------- PLEASE PASS ON OUR LUV & DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO JAN. From all at Normans LTS------------------------- Great sadness, disappointment, despair and disbelief. All words that describe some of the feelings but, words which today, are completely inadequate in describing the loss of John. John lived and breathed radio, even listening in to BBC Radio Jersey from his and Jan's mobile home in France. Not because he had to, but because he wanted to - because he enjoyed it so much. It even gave him the opportunity to comment on what those of us who have filled in for him have said. The "Vital Vinyl", an opportunity to play another "cracking tune" was a favourite part of John's Saturday Show - one that I have enjoyed crawling around my loft looking for something vital enough! I will certainly miss our chats about all sorts of things, hospital radio, records (of the vinyl variety), France and, well, life in general. Finally, I'd like to think that John has moved on to a place where the needle never jumps on a record, where CD's always play and where "Winging Indie" music is banned! Rest in peace old friend. Phil Taylor------------------------- On behalf of the Director, Management and Staff at Jersey Airport we extend our sincere condolences to the family, friends and BBC colleagues of John Uphoff Jersey Airport------------------------- Please pass on my very sincere condolences to Mrs. U and the family at this very sad time. They have been constantly in my thoughts since we heard the news of John's illness. I can’t begin to understand the pain that all of you at BBC Radio Jersey must be going through at the loss of one of your much-loved and respected colleagues. Wendy------------------------- From the whole Ringsdore family, we are so sad to hear about John. We had some good times together, I will play "17 again" for you this morning John. He was the man that introduced me to radio. Katy Ringsdore------------------------- Yes, I've been shedding tears for the loss of John today as perhaps many other listeners will have. It is as though someone has switched a light off at Radio Jersey, even though the other presenters are carrying on gamely. There have not been many broadcasters who could make people laugh first thing in the morning as much as John did on the radio with Roger but with a humility that was only equalled by his wit and talent as a presenter. My sincere condolences to Mrs. Uphoff and his colleagues at Radio Jersey. Marguerite------------------------- Dear Roger - My wife, Veronica, and I are very sorry to hear about the untimely death of John; we both enjoyed your banter. How sad that a bright light at the BBC should be extinguished; please give our deep sympathy to Mrs U, and tell her that a new bright star is shining in the night sky. Michael Fox (of Grouville)------------------------- So sorry to hear of John's untimely death. My heart goes out to his wife Jan. Although I never met John, I feel I have lost a friend. Carmel------------------------- What a great guy - full of fun but also a consummate professional with a wonderfully human touch, and "doing the job" so well. John may you rest in peace - keep them laughing up there - their gain is, sadly for us, our loss. Our prayers, thoughts and sympathy to Jan, Derek and all associates and friends at a very sad time. Lawrence Turner & all at St. Martin's P.C.------------------------- We are very saddened to hear the news that John has passed away - Sincere condolence to Mrs U, John's family and to Roger. The mornings won't be the same again. Roger you have been a true professional over the past few weeks and especially this morning - our thoughts are with you all. The Syvs - St Helier------------------------- The world has lost a truly unique broadcasting talent who it was my honour and privilege to work with for a number of years. There have been many occasions when John would say something and I would think 'I wish I'd thought of that!'. Miss you mate Peter Mac------------------------- John said it as it was with humour. Roger and Diane------------------------- It is with great sadness we learn of the passing away of John. He was a supporter of all that we did at St John Ambulance. Our condolences to his family and work colleagues. Nigel Truscott, Director St John Ambulance Jersey------------------------- Roger I know you will be snowed under with all the messages of sympathy for Mrs. U and there have and will be a lot of tears shed in Jersey and elsewhere this morning on hearing of the passing of John. We all have our special memories of him and mine is the occassion when he broadcast the programme from Durrell. I had the priviledge of driving him around the park in what we call our Dodo machine. It was a hilarious morning ,and I will allways remember him as a great broadcaster with a lovely sense of humour. He will be much missed. Anne Barnes------------------------- So very sorry to hear the sad news of John's passing a few minutes ago. His broadcasting skills had made him a family friend of his Jersey listening public, and I am only one of many that will miss his cheeery voice in the morning. Pass my condolence to his wife and family, and I know that the sadness we are all feeling must be intense for them. Audrey------------------------- Please would you pass on our condolences to John's wife and to all BBC staff at the sad loss of one of your best-ever presenters, fun, professional, with a delightfully sideways look at so many aspects of life. He brought the mornings to life, no matter what the weather or our perseonal the prospects for the day. To me his day-to-day description of the construction of the new BBC building was the best - how did he get away with it?! Hugh and Christine Gill------------------------- On behalf of the Council of Ministers I would like to extend sincere condolences to the family and friends of John Uphoff, and his colleagues at the BBC. Paul Routier, Acting Cheif Minister------------------------- My sincere condolences on John's death. When I first came on the radio to talk to John with news of WI events and happenings I was quite nervous knowing his ability to tease and banter. I braced myself for the usual Jam and Jerusalem jokes and approach. But he was always really interested in what we were doing and very supportive and I really enjoyed our broadcasts. I am sure many other WI members would join me in passing on our sympathy to Mrs Uphoff and you and your colleagues. Breakfast time in particular will never be quite the same! Joy Thomson------------------------- We are so, so sorry to hear of your and Mrs U’s sad loss. John was a wonderful person and presenter and will be sadly missed. Miriam and Alan------------------------- I just wanted to say how sorry I am about the loss of your sparring partner John. Your loss must be as equally devastating as John's family and my thoughts go equally to you as well them. I loved the fun banter between the two of you and will miss it as I alwasy woke up with the two of you. God bless you, Diane------------------------- Very saddened to hear the news about John's death. Please pass on my love to Jan when you see her. Babs------------------------- Please pass on my love and deepest sympathy to Jan and to all of you there. Caron_________________________________ last updated: 11/08/2008 at 15:27 Have Your Say
