Grouville were in their first Trinity Shield final for 32 years. ![]() The Trinity Shield is the CI's oldest trophy St Clement came from behind to win the Trinity Shield with a 3-1 victory against Grouville.
Grouville, who were in their first final since 1976, were leading at half-time thanks to an 18th minute goal from Richard Stephens. Stephens managed to beat goalkeeper Danny Evans and centre back Stuart Andrew to the ball to give the underdogs the first goal of the match. Contentious penaltyIt took a penalty (strongly protested by Grouville) scored off the post by Dave Watson to level the score in the 68th minute. Just a minute later Grouville’s dream of a first Trinity Shield win in 79 years faded as Matt Rawlings ran through the middle to put St Clement ahead. Rawlings went on to score his second in the 81st minute when he lobbed the keeper from 20 yards with a cross and with it give St Clement their fourteenth Trinity Shield trophy. It was the third time in this competition that St Clement, who were in their fifth successive final, have come from behind to take the win. ![]() St Clement last won the Trinity Shield in 2006 'I think we deserved it'Kenny Addison, in his debut season as St Clement manager, thought that his team were “awful” in the first half: “We allowed Grouville to have time on the ball, we allowed them to dominate us physically, and when we did have possession we gave it away easily.” However, he felt it was a different story when they came back out after the break: “Second half we were easily the better side – and on balance I think we deserved it.” ![]() Grouville were last in the Shield final in 1976 'It wasn't to be'Andy Cadoret, manager of Grouville, was disappointed that his team missed the opportunity to get their name on the Trinity Shield for the first time since 1929. “It wasn’t to be. We gave a silly penalty away,” he said. “A lot of people in the crowd said it wasn’t a penalty but I could see from where I was standing…and I think it was a penalty.” “To let a goal in two minutes later was stupid really,” explained Cadoret. “We should have had them killed off at half time…I thought we absolutely out-played them first half in every area of the field.” Around a hundred people, most of whom were supporting Grouville, turned up at Springfield to watch the match. last updated: 11/01/2008 at 11:11 Have Your Say
