A Motto For Jersey
By Gareth Alexander
We ask you to submit your ideas for a Jersey motto.
Dozens of countries around the world have mottos which rouse pride and epitomise their nationality. France has “Liberty, equality, fraternity”, the U.S. “In God We Trust” and Brazil “Order and Progress”.
British Prime Minister Gordon Brown has recently tried to inspire the public by asking them to consider a motto which sums up the UK. Traditionally, the motto has been “Dieu et mon droit”, French for “God and My Right”.
The response by the UK public has been varied to say the least. Suggestions ranged from the serious “Four People, One Kingdom”, to the cynical “The Land of Political Correctness” and the downright bizarre “Just don’t pick at it.”
We thought that we’d follow suit and ask you to submit mottos of five or six words which you think best capture the essence of Jersey.
