Sid of the Sand Dunes

Sid of the Sand Dunes

Jersey artist Mark Jackson has released his latest creation, a lizard called Sid, on to the Sand Dunes and the world at large.

Gotham City has Batman, Metropolis has Superman, New York has Spiderman and now Jersey has Sid of the Sand Dunes.

Every hero needs his secret identity and Sid is no different. The islands newest saviour works as an attraction at the Zoo where he plots the movements of baddies like 'The Shadow' from within the safety of his Electric Force Field.

The mind behind Sid of the Sand Dunes is local graphic artist Mark Jackson. He introduces Sid to new readers in the following way:

Sid of the Sand Dunes

Not so long ago the sand dunes of L’Hisson were the peaceful home of lazy lizards. They were happy days, days when lizards could enjoy the sun all day long.

Then the one known as The Shadow came to the dunes, casting the lizard’s villages in darkness and fear.

He brought with him a mighty army of fleas and ticks that destroyed the lizard’s villages... and for a time, all hope throughout the dunes was lost. Everyday, when The Shadow came they feared the worst.

Until one day a hero shone through the darkness and brought hope to the lizard’s hearts.

This hero was Sid. Now Sid and his trusted companion, Jorge, travel through the island of Jersey, risking their lives and saving others in the eternal hunt for… THE SHADOW!

Working as an attraction at the local zoo Sid plots the movements of The Shadow safe within his Electric Force Field (visit the zoo, you’ll see)!

Formidable enemies such as the evil Sparrow Sister’s, Minx Purr and Man-Unkind all step in the way of finding his foe, but the lightening quick Sid with his array of weapons always lives to fight another day!

So if The Shadow comes to your parish and all hope is lost, look out for that speck of light that brings with it... Sid of the Sand Dunes!

Environmental message

There is more to Sid of the Sand Dunes than just a fun comic strip for kids and a new super hero. Sid carries with it a strong environmental message in a fun way.

Creator Mark Jackson says: “What I’m trying to do with Sid is create a funny action
adventure series that actually carries a strong environmental message.

Sid of the Sand Dunes (Sid)

"I know Sid is set in Jersey, but think of this as just a backdrop, it could be anywhere where species are under threat.

"I also feel you can’t force this message on people. Sid works as a funny adventure… it leaves you to make your own conclusions as to the message about the threats wildlife faces everyday.”

I'd love to see this on telly... Maybe Sid could go into battle with the evil Flying Banana!

Mich
Surely a Jersey Super Hero and his Jersey cow sidekick should have Jersey accents.

Dave
My son enjoys Simon Says in the Jersey Evening Post which Mark also does (I'm guessing it's the same Mark) and I think there's a talent there that needs to be tapped into further. Although, if he becomes another Walt Disney does Jersey have the room to host a Sid of the Sand Dunes theme Park?

Jon
Look at it this way Mike, Matt Groening did some sub-standard illustrating once... but you wouldn't say The Simpson's wasn't a success would you? The concept is a great one and if this had the right backing I think it's a winner.

Andy B
I think it's a great idea! If handled correctly, it could prove great for tourism and get kids out enjoying the sand dunes again! The tourists could soon be arriving at "Sid of the Sand Dunes" Airport!

Chris
Definately a good start to something. Mark looks like a talented artist.

Mike
Hate to be a kill-joy, but I doubt it would get off the ground even with the funding. This is sub-standard illustration, really nothing special, and don't the lizards in the comic strip look slightly phallic? Children don't want polictical and social messages, and not a lot of kids read comics these days, they are just for the collectors. Sorry Ryan, but don't you have anything better to write about?

Dave
The £230,000 spent on the logo whould have been better spent on getting brilliant ideas like this off the ground! Think what this would do for tourism if kid's were asking Mum and Dad to come to Jersey to see Sid.

Chrissie
How about the BBC start a "Sid to be the new Jersey logo" campaign - it's a damn sight better!!
