How We Built Britain

The Waterfront in 2007

The buildings and architecture at the Waterfront has always been a contraversial topic, but what do you think of it now in 2007? Do you still feel the same as you did 5 years ago? What do you like, what do you dislike?

Buildings in and around the Waterfront

Like it or loathe it there is no denying that towns and cities all over the world are constantly growing and changing - and St Helier is certainly no exception.

One of the most drastic (and controversial) changes to the island’s architectural scenery has been the development of the Waterfront site – most people returning to the island for the first time in several years will comment on how different the area looks.

When the plans to build on the reclaimed land were first submitted nearly every island had a strong opinion of what they wanted, or didn’t want, constructed there.

Now the site has been in use for several years do you still feel the same way about it today?

Do you still hate the buildings and wish the whole area could be reclaimed by the sea? Or do you think that it provides an excellent selection of venues that suit your lifestyle?

If you don’t like it what would you like to see instead? If you use the Waterfront regularly what else would you like to be built down there?

i love the waterfront!!!!!!!!!!!
i love the new venues and stuff and i couldnt live without cineworld liquid etc your all to stubborn!!!!!!!!! though i feel sorry for the odeon now that cineworld stole the limelight

Catherine
Definitely NOT!!! what are these people thinking? We should be making a feature of Jersey's history not destroying it! Jersey is NOT a French Market town! Is this just a ploy where Clive Pearce says something outrageous to make his mark & ensure we remember who he is? Is he someone we should be listening to at all?

Louise Doyle
I can't imagine the market place anywhere else. It anchors St Helier right where it is.

J
I think it was Bob Hope

Kanada ken
Who was the 1st person to suggest moving the market? I'm hoping this is all a big joke.

Furious jersey bean!!
How dare you even think about moving the market! It is the heart of town and it should always remain so! Stop changing are island for the worse! Leave it be and stop buliding unnessasery things!!

Bob
Somebody once told me that architects never deliberately design ugly builings - well I'd like to speak to the idiot who designed the cinema - God what an ugly, out of place eyesore - it has to be the worst buildind I've ever seen

Dave
Has a building in jersey EVER been praised and applauded? No. Locals here think that we deserve stunning iconic buildings by world class architects. Wake up, we're a small island that is developing with healthy progress and an excellent economy, enjoy what we have and stop complaining about everything.

A catalogue of errors on the part of WEB, the Planning Department and each of the politicians involved with the project. Regrettably with the amount of spin and scapegoats (sorry expensive UK consultants) now deployed to improve the site its most certainly going to continue to be raft of overscaled, ugly and unimaginative buildings. We should attach a sign to all the waterfront buildings bearing the name of the Planning President responsible for passing the plans.

lj
i use to fish that wall as a boy. what a shambles is it now.like the rest of the developments jersey is a dump now but someone somewhere is lining there pockets,, look at gloucester street wat a mess. doesnt matter whatever we say or write no one listens.im going to encourage my kids to get of this rock when they grow up and go make there life somewhere where its not so corrupt............. who is getting the backhanders for all this shoddy work....

bw
sinking the road is a good idea, however, this should be from HSBC on Esplanade all way to lib square, just sinking upto exsisting underpass doesn't make sense as the end of the open land wouldn't be that used... unless they do something with it that is worthwhile.how much money do the jsy gov want to waste? Sales tax coming in soon... what next..? Sink the Road tax? or maybe, "Ruin The Island" Tax

Tracy
i think the waterfront should be knocked down and left for the sea. we have stupid things like hotels (how many island hotels have closed down in the last 10 years?? why build another one??)flats (just look in the JEP to see the massive amount of flats on the market)and cinemas (there was nothing wrong with the odeon), and dont even get me started on the new road/tunnel thingy they are planning!!! :(

Ben
It a disgrace you look from Fort Regent, it amazing how badly people in charge of the Island have got it wrong. I am far from the only one of this view as just finsihed a degree in Liverpool, England I have met many that have visited the Island and share the view that the island has change so much and that the change have been awful and destroyed the look of the Island

ben
well said bw but it is ugly - but many use it wothout wondering about whether it looks good - lets now have some restaraunts and bars to give it some nightime atmos.

Bex
I don't think there is too much wrong with the facilities that are there now, but there is massive room for improvement. Compared to how other places in the world have done (Cape Town, Sydney etc) ours is a bit pathetic really. Where are the restaurants, bars, shops and holiday atmosphere that the others manage to create?

bexs
its souless cheap and lacking style it looks like a chavs empire. The food outlets are nasty fast food establishments, the pool is losing money it just looks like a cheap hastily bunged together mass of concrete

bw
"Local Person" - Weren't you once a teenager? the waterfront is a popular "hangout" for teenagers, and also is a family place, Cinema, Nightlife, Swimming/Health and food outlets all over there. From town side, yes the waterfront (Liquid/Cineworld walls) look ugly, but all complex is something that 1000's of islanders use daily, so it can't be that bad

Helen
A shopping centre is a bad idea "Me". Firstly it will take all of the business away from shops in town, secondly have you seen how huge, grey and ugly West Quays in Southampton is??

Shelly
Looks like Liberty Wharf is going to be cool. Hopefully that will take off and the Waterfront can be razed to the ground

Local person
It is very ugly and at night a rather nasty, rubbish strewn, teenager infested area, I only go on the odd occasion to go to the cinema

Elvis
The trouble is that there are a complete bunch of monkeys in charge. It doesn't matter what we say or do, they'll do what they 'thinnk' is right for the island. Pat themselves on the back for a job well done, and pocket a handsome salary to boot. It would almost be funny. But it's happening, and it's happening to us. We're a laughing stock.

Jay
mish mash of cheap and nasty buildings approved by a bunch of bunch of backward ameteurs

Me
You need a shopping centre. Deffinatly. Everyone would love it. The amount of money it would gain. If it really takes off it could even get as big as West Queys in Southampton.
