Tour de Bretagne in Jersey

By Claire Peters
Jersey hosted the time trial section of the Tour de Bretagne cycling race. It was the first time any part of the prestigious event had ever been staged outside of Brittany - and it was deemed a great success.

Victoria Avenue was closed for most of the day on Wednesday 25 April when Jersey hosted the time trial stage of a major French cycling race.

The Tour de Bretagne is in it's 50th year it was the first time that any part of the prestigious event has ever been held outside of Brittany.

The event attracted 120 professional and amateur riders who completed a 4.7km (3 mile) sprint in Jersey before the cyclists moved on to French shores for the road race.

Twenty-two racing teams from sixteen nations competed in the event, where past winners have gone on to victory in the legendary Tour de France.

Holland's Lars Boom won the event in a time of 5:30.9. Alex Rasmussen from Denmark took second place in 5:32, whilst Norway's Edvald Boasson-Hagen was third in 5:39.

Legendary cycling commentator Phil Liggett said that the Jersey event was a huge success, and that the competitors and their teams had been "bowled over" by the whole occasion.

He explained that the Tour de Bretagne is a major part of the European cycling calendar for developing professional cyclists, and that in two or three years many of the competitors will be big contenders in the Tour de France.

Mike Tait from Jersey Tourism said that it was a “huge privilege” for the island to host “a very high profile event on the European cycling calendar.”

He believes that the race will “create a spotlight on Jersey in a very important part of the world, which is Brittany – we do a lot of business with Brittany in terms of tourism”.

It is estimated that hosting the time trial cost Jersey almost £17,000 (€25,000).

Whilst Victoria Avenue was closed it was technically a private road and a group of French motorcycle police were given temporary jurisdiction over the area.

narrow minded remarker - if u are trying to suggest that a hotel that looks like a B&Q warehouse is good for jersey then you really are true to your name. Oh and if you are a busy 9-5er then you wont have had any problems with the avenue as i managed to drive down it at 4.45pm so not so much of an inconvenience was it?

Sqn Leader C Gull
Agreed. What a load of old cobblers. “Jersey should be proud” ? … is that proud to give 25,000 euros to have a bunch of poofs in lycra being watched by other lycra enthusiasts whizzing up and down Jerseys main road at rush hour. Do these people at tourism actually think that someone will watch this tripe on TV and think, “hmm that’s a nice looking road, lets go over and holiday in Jersey”. Also, why on earth do we have to let old Johnnie French policeman over here on his motorbike ….. oh yes, our lot aren’t allowed them.Do not encourage these people. Cyclists are pests.

Late for work
This event should have been organized for a Sunday not a weekday when a lot of people need to get to work.thanks for the 1 hour traffic. its bad enough having to wait in traffic every day for 16 WEEKS in St.Brelade for (essential) road works, weel done once again!

Narrow minded remarker
What rubbish people live on this island to find watching strangers cycle around entertaining!! I'm sure they'll be painting inside the Radisson Hotel soon, why not go and watch that dry? That place will bring tourists too and won't get in the way of busy 9-5 types who just want to get home once work has finished, not sit in more traffic than usual! I hope they don't come back next year, that way the States can throw another £17,000 at getting decent branding for the island!

What an honour that they picked Jersey as the venue for the first time the event leaves french territory. Great stuff. And how miserable are you people that were worried about traffic - for goodness sake it was one single day! Try and think for once what is better for the Jersey rather then just yourself.

I went down not expecting to enjoy it, as I wouldn't have thought that watching bikes whizz up and down on their own would have been much fun (as they weren't racing against anyone). I expected to stay just 15mins or so - I stayed for the full 2 hours. Great fun and amazingly professional....PLEASE COME BACK NEXT YEAR!

Steven
I thought the whole event was great. Such a fantastic atmosphere. Jersey should be proud!

Jen
I think it's fantastic that such a major event was hosted in Jersey. There were cameras and reporters from several major european broadcasters/newspapers.

A lot of narrow minded remarks as usual! This is a fantastic event and will do no end of good for Jersey and Jersey tourism. There was a great buzz at the event and anyone complaining about the closure of a road does not surprise me as it is a typical response of so many who live in Jersey who cant see outside the bubble that they live in. As A Mitchell said it was a shame it was during the week and not at the weekend. Well done Jersey for trying something new - a great success.

Mike
The reason it was held on Victoria Avenue and not the five mile road is because the five mile road isn't wide enough - Victoria Avenue provided the ability to go up, round and down and enough space for support services.

Alistair Mitchell
Just a shame it was during the day midweek when all the schools are working and poeple in work. Meant I couldn't get out to watch it! The crowds were obviously lower than a w/e spectacle.A great coup nonetheless for the Island. Let it return next year.

J
It's people on bikes. I don't see the appeal. They should have held this on the 5 mile road too so that it didn't cause the traffic problems that it did, even driving over the top of the island. Big waste of our Islands resources, leave the Tour de FRANCE in frog land I say!

T
Very impressed with what I saw and the organisation of the event.

Sam
I watched it for 30 mimutes during my lunch break. Fantastic French atmosphere at OUEST PARC.Hope the race returns to our shores.

bob
Great event, no law and order issues , police men on motorbikes and all packed up and gone without any trouble - bring back the french police - allez les bleu

PM
Great event, ideal location which enabled spectators to attend the event during their lunch break.

Ben
Great photos and what a great event - I know it caused difficulties with traffic, but so does the Battle, and that happens every year

Richard
To the lady who stated on Channel 103 'I live @ St Peters and I'm going to Gorey, and after 1 1/2 hrs I'm still not there!' Why are you going down the hill towards town? Why just go accross the top of the island? Personally I live in town and was out west this a.m. It took me 20mins to go over the top to come back home.....easy isn't it!

Richard
To all the drivers who seemed to have a 'long wait' today due to the road closure.....have you ever tried to go a different way? either to work or 'play'

John
Went down to watch at lunchtime. Great event. Good atmosphere.

M
I agree, or why not do it after early morning traffic - between that and DVLA doing vehicle checks by the tunnel it caused a lot of tail backs, and a lot of people late for work!

h
its stupid i waited 1 hour in the traffic this morning, y not do it down st ouens!!!!
