Inside the States Chamber

What would you ask?

By Ryan Morrison
If you could ask any Minister any question – what would you ask and who would it be?

Twice a month two Ministers face questions from their fellow States Members about their department. But what would you ask?

One part of the fortnightly States of Jersey sittings is Question Time. This is where States Members have the chance to ask two Ministers questions without notice.

Mike Vibert

This gives Members the chance to put the Minister on the spot about anything from the management of their department to major policy decisions.

Youth Assembly

Once a year a group of sixth formers get to take up the opportunity of asking Ministers questions without notice.

This year the sixth formers will be debating whether people should be sent to prison only in exceptional circumstances.

It’s one of a series of topics for the Jersey Youth Assembly which is now in its tenth year. The Youth Assembly is organised by the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association and sees A Level students meet in the States Chamber to debate issues about their community.

Students form the Jersey College for Girls, Beaulieu, De La Salle, Hautlieu and Victoria College will be discussing various topics.

Senator Frank Walker in the States Chamber

Senator Mike Vibert will be asked about the cost of going to university, and about providing more facilities for young musicians in Jersey.

Deputy Guy de Faye will be asked what is being done to reduce traffic pollution in the island.

And the Chief Minister, Senator Frank Walker will be asked about States members conduct and about the possibility of the Channel Islands severing their ties with the United Kingdom.

But what would you ask?

If you had the opportunity to put a question to a Minister in the States of Jersey which Minister would you want to question and what would you ask?

a
why do we get taxed on our social security contributions and then again on old age pension????

Joe
I would ask… Is the Jersey Heritage Trust incompetent as an entity?

BJ Hotton
Why is the States of Jersey are 'HELL BENT' on selling off property owned by the people of Jersey, for what either seems to be 'half the market price' or selling to a restricted market, as in the original plan to sell land at Mont Mado? I would like this question to be answered by all politicians, failing this the Chief Minister. B Hotton.

Jason
I would ask Frank Walker whether he believes the people support his position as Chief Minister. Especially as he only got in last time by the skin of his teeth.
