BBC Radio Jersey at 25

BBC Radio Jersey launched on 15 March 1982 and was on 292 medium wave.

Twenty five years ago, you could only hear BBC Radio Jersey in 292 metres medium wave. The introduction of FM stereo transmissions followed later, as did streaming on the internet.

The station went on air at 7pm on Wednesday 15th March with a programme hosted by Peter Gore.

He was BBC Radio Jersey's breakfast show presenter and the honour of being the first voice heard on the new station fell to him.

Peter Gore welcomed islanders to their new community radio service and then introduced the then Chairman of the BBC the late George Howard and the Bailiff at the time - the late Frank Ereaut - who jointly performed the opening ceremony.

Yes, happy 25th birthday to you in Jersey. I still listen sometimes over here in Exeter, Devon. I can only listen on 1026MW which is sometimes crackly, but that is quite good for the mainland. I used to phone in for Roger Bara's Saturday lunchtime programme where I did terrible on the sports quiz. good memories! Best of luck.

Brings back memories of childhood holidays in Jersey listening to radio Jersey. I was a radio nut as a child (still am!). Well done on 25 years.Perhaps it's my age but didn't the jingles sound so much better in those days. So much warmer and fun (if a little camp!). That's what you want from a station sound!

I worked for Radio Jersey in 1986 for about 6 months after I'd travelled round the world and was hoping to become a journalist. I worked under Mike Warr, and Beth Lloyd, Mike Vibert, Alan Philips, Murray Norton, Richard Johnson and Jackie Monkman were there at the same time. There was also another Richard. It was a fantastic opportunity to learn what it takes to become a news journalist and the skills I was taught have stood me in good stead in other walks of life. I wish Radio Jersey a very happy 25th birthday
