outspoken but isn't this what democracy is all about
john Myler
Whatever the we believe censorship by the Local Paper is an attack on democracy. The Editor and the owners should be made to print his letters and explain to the electorate and their readers why they are selective in the coverage of Island matters.

Martyn: The whole point of reducing the tax on the finance industry is to remain competitive against our competitors doing the exact same. Rightly or wrongly we are almost totally reliant on the finance industry which if we lost would lead to 1000’s of Jersey born residents unemployed. To cover this cost alone would mean you would be paying a whole lot more then 3% GST and 20/20. Blame the EU… they’re the ones putting pressure on us
joe
i for 1 think the only person who has the islanders interests at heart and not to line his pockets is mr syvret, the rest of the govorment likes to pull the wool over our eyes and paint a pretty picture.there selling our island out to all the rich people around the world.now i think its about time they put there money into it instead of hiding it in offshore bank accounts ..i wouldn't be suprised if they had more money between them than jersey itself has..it will be interesting to see which of the politcians actually stays over here when their time is up..they gamble with our lives every day just to take more hard earned money from ourselves there a bunch of hipacrits that can't think any further than £ sign the kids are our nxt generation we give them nuthing to do exept drink ..jersey has a big big problem with the wrong people in power..im ashamed to call myself a jerseyman the rest of the world thinks were all millionairs over here just goes to show the image of this hell hole...
ruby
hello i would like to know how much money st. helier gets of the goverment each year
Montfort Tadier
As a voter, and one who voted for Stuart Syvret, I must take exception at Matthew Price's implication that Senator Syvret's behaviour is somehow letting down the public which voted him in. On the contrary, I think that the said senator is one of the very few Jersey politicians actually willing to stand up and tell the truth - even when it is not popular. Surely we need more like him.
Interesting how the establishment defend free speech and democracy when it suits them (one need only think of Terry Le Main's numerous - and less eloquent outburts), but never when it touches on something sensitive and real...
Martyn
Where else is the money going to come from ben? Well, why not tax the finance industry for a change. There the ones making all the money after all! Actually, they'll make even more money if all these extra costs come in, as all us normal islanders will probably end up taking out even more loans etc. If finance leaves the island because of this, thats there problem. They can always go to Dubai or somwhere where there wanted. As with Syvret, I attended many of the elections prior to the cheif minister election, and the majority of people indicated they wanted Syvret as minister. I go back to my previous statement, so why did Walker get it? Simple, greed
Ben
God help us if you clueless people want no to 20/20 no gst no nothing that even smacks of costing us ordinary people a few quid more each week - where else is the money going to come from? Be realistic - times are changing - we can't go back to 1970/80 where money just rolled in willy nilly - our so-called brilliant politicians of the time spectacularly failed to look even a year into the future -they are the ones that let us down -they are the ones that overspent unbelievably -they were the ones you should be blaming for their despicable and lamentable lack of foresight and wisdom -that era cost us so much more than any decisions being taken today. We're reaping the rewards of crap goverment for the last 30 years of the century.
Graham
They cannot possibly sack Syvret, over 15,000 votes by the people of Jersey in the last elections, how many did Walker get? It is about time we had a change of thinking in our leadership. Far too many millionaires running this island, with hidden agendas and vested interests at the cost of the elderly, the working class and the single person. It just cannot continue. Get a new face of Government which will start reversing these diabolical taxes onto the rich, Ozouf, Le Sueur and Walker OUT!
Phil
Well done Stuart! It's about time we all stood up to those who exploit the Island. We need more politicians like Stuart, and less money grabbing rich members, who would not notice a rise in indirect taxation if it hit them in the teeth! Say no to 20% means 20%. Say no to GST, which is liable to rise costs by 6 - 8% when extra wages and overheads are costed in. Say no to increased university costs, why penalise the young for our politician's mistakes? We are heading for high inflation, fuelled but the lack of business taxes and increased personal taxes. Well done to Stuart for bringing it to everyone's attention. We need ministers and chief ministers elected on policies not by the old boys network. If any try to remove Stuart from the states, watch out, the electors are watching!
Tim
Stuart Syvret will either become Chief Minister and bring about a rebirth, a renaissance in Jersey with some honour and integrity in politics...or be buried figuratively and literally by the corrupt machine he seeks to expose and oppose.
If there were an election amongst the public for the Chief Ministers post, then Mr Syvret would quite likely be voted in, this is an accepted fact. So expect the voting system to be radically changed before Mr Walker vacates his job.
Surely even North Korea isn’t this bizarre?
Steve
100% SPOT ON!How dare anyone claim that Stuart has no grasp of modern economics when the issues are not only of an economic nature. They are much wider in their scope! They encompass a whole range of values far and above those of a mere monetary nature.Nil morality, the lack of respect for one's enviroment, the blind pursuit of money to name but a few. Those that can obviously live with the idea of taxing the less well-off should be totally ashamed of themselves!
Peter
Stuart Syvret is an absolute disgrace, He just likes to get people talking about himself as it deflects their attention from his inability to run his dept properly and to control spending. He is clueless about business, has a chip on his shoulder, and should be sacked from public office. He is a liability to Jersey.
Laura
Syvert letter what can i say....
100% true why is everyone making a big deal about he has just said what we all think and the only people who have a problem with it are the people who are running this island and doing a bad job of it.
Ben
Sorry Mr Syvret - your politics doesn't work for those who are trying to be successful - you'll end up despising us for our success - thats a frightning prospect, but your place in the states is well worth it - others appear to despise the less fortunate, so you help to balance it all up I suppose
Malcolm
So everybody below believes it is right to pay a tax on food? What it boils down to is that people are struggling now and are being bled for money they can ill afford to give. It does all boil down to Government mad on spending and a Government that has never taken inflation seriously.
Hazel
Stuart - tell me, why does Soth Kora work and North Korea doesn't. Why is China soon to be the wealthyest nation on earth after being one of the poorest for 60 years. Why are there now loads of rich Russians ? - the answer is they abandoned thae economics that you still belive in
Michaela
Reading the letters below frighten me for the future of Jersey.
Mr. Syvret has no understanding of modern day economics, but it's easy to get public sympathy by using a populist cause - just blame the rich - that's easy - and hides the facts. He should be ashamed of himself, and if he's not he should resign.
All this talk of " good on yer mate" / "he's the only one with the guts to tell the truth" is the problem - he tells people what they want to hear - not the real truth
David Singleton
Basic economics seperates tax into many catagories - one is net tax - this is the amount of tax paid, but less the individual 'takes' back by the services that the tax is used for - So one of Stuart's 'billionaires' - pays a measley £200k tax - BUT doesn't use many services - they have private education, private health etc - so they contribute a full £200k - on the other hand ordinary people like you and me might be paying £15k tax - but we use subsidised public transport, public health care , schools etc which 'cost' from our tax - some from my £15k tax, I'm taking services worth - who knows, maybe £14k per year, som my 'net' tax is just £1k - Stuart can't face it, but we need the rich guys - they don't need us - they can bugger off to Guernsey, The IofM or anywhere they chose - don't forget that.
Nicky
Jason Roberts, and 'T&C' are the people that Stuart is aiming his comments at - sounds good as a soundbite - but when you do the sums - it never adds up - time and time again he makes statements which appeal to 'the masses' with no fact to back them up
Jason Roberts
I wrote the “Paradise for the rich and to hell with poor” letter featured in yesterday’s JEP and I completely stick by what I said in it. Syvret is starting to say what we all think and the sooner we get rid of the snobs that are running our island and then start reversing some of these ridiculous new tax policies aimed at the working class the better off we will all be. Since the letter was published everybody that knows me has agreed 100%.
Martin
I'm sure Stuart is a nice guy - but he lacks a fundemental understanding of too many issues - he's like the 'Daily Star' or the 'News of the World' - he grabs headlines - then shrinks away from mayhem he causes.
Dave Kitchener
Amusing letter - shame he hasn't got a grasp of economics to back up his wild clims
T & C
THANKYOU MR SYVRET NOT ONLY FOR HAVING THE COURAGE FOR STANDING UP FOR YOUR BELIEFS BUT ALSO PUTTING PEN TO PAPER ON WHAT IS REALLY HAPPENING ON OUR ISLAND. WE ABSOLUTLY AGREE AND ARE BEHIND YOU ALL THE WAY. A POLITICIAN FOR THE WORKING PEOPLE. WELL DONE.
Scott Mills
Syvret is a Legend! I left jersey a while ago, and he's the only one in the states i would cook a BLT for, the others can starve. Big up to you mate, and says it how it is. Pity all the other OAP's in the states, you know the ones who get their 'mates' to vote for them haven't got cojones like him. YNWA
Gary Blanchford
I read Senator Syvret's letter last night on the internet. I live in Guernsey and it could so easily have been applied to the way Guernsey has gone and will continue to go if left in the hands of the developers.I think his satirical look at Jersey through his letter will empathise with the feelings of the average Jerseyman (and Guernseyman)and may go some way to make politicians wonder if they are not actually destroying the quality of life within these islands.
Sarah
I totally agree with Syvret's views, it's just a shame he goes about things in such a poor way EVERY time. He'd be brilliant if he could just bite his tongue until he has the evidence to support his views!
Martyn
Good old Stuart, hes only saying what the majority of islands want to say!, but are to afraid to do so. Over development?, too right! Everyone who thinks with their head and not with their wallets can see that. Stuart knows what hes talking about and understands how an island works. Why do you think he didnt win the Cheif Minister vote??
AD
Syvret seems like a petulant child throwing his toys out the pram. He can't seem to cope when he doesn't get his way, doesn't seem at all like a team player. A shame, as he was probably doing a decent job as health minister but would be far too risky for the Island to allow him a role such as chief minister, too much of a loose cannon to deal with the internaiotnl community. No loyalty to his colleaques or even Jersey.
However, he is a "professional" poitiican and I'm not sure what else he is qualfied to do in a new career - although his creative writing skills may impress some.
My husband & I have worked hard all our lives, raised 3 boys and done well for ourselves, but Syvret would probably view us as the evil rich & tax us even more
Andrew
Wow! How refreshing to see a politician speak not only his mind, but the absolute truth. He has said what I expect most of us are feeling. Here is someone who genuinly cares about Jersey and the people who are in it. This is the calibre of person I want for Chief Minister. Well done Stuart!
Simon
There should be more states members like Stuart. Not afraid to say what he sees. There are too many states members who like to 'sit on the fence' so this is the only reason why senator syvrets allegations have been blown out of proportion.
Its good to see a states member stand up for what he belives in. All other states members could learn something from senator syvret. Well done stuart.
Leonberger Man
Hi absolutley agree with Mr Syvret and i would think a great percentage of the island do aswell !
Why cant we have more people likle him and Mr Shenton, honest and outspoken. We cant have many more cockups like the school bus service, with not enough seats and buses too wide for jersey roads, or even condor who charge far too much, o what about the states overspending all the time, it's simple accounting only spemnd what you have, instead of making working class pay for their mistakes all the time. Prime site on the waterfront, execllent views, and what do they put on it- A KFC and a cinema ! - Come on Stuart sort them out !
Rita Hughes
I dont se what senator syvret has done wrong! he is only expressing what anyone in there right minds living in jersey is thinking
the only thing is he has done it far more eloquently
than myself and in fact most people and i whole heartedly agree with him,
we do still have the freedom of speach dont we? or has that been taken from us as well???
