Despite feelings amongst the crowd that they were not the deserved winners, Revolt won the first prize of five paid gigs at Chicago Rock. Typically Norman and Omerta also performed at the final, whilst 13:53 and Off Limits were the favourites to win. The final result was a tie of 41.5 out of 50 between Revolt and 13.53. The judges then had a majority vote of 3 to 2 for Revolt to win. Therefore, 13.53 won the second prize of a £100 voucher for Island Music.

Playing a set of punk rock genre and sporting luminescent outfits, Revolt entertained the crowd although much of it dispersed when they played. The remaining audience, though, moshed and listened though I couldn’t make out any lyrics. One listener said, “I can’t believe that they won heat 3, never mind the final. It just goes to show that the judges had no idea.” Being a judge on the final, I did find that some of the other scores were a little bizarre. Omerta ambitiously played an all-original set which impressed the crowd. The general consensus was that they should have come at least third. | "I think revolt should enjoy their winnings" | | Michael Dryden, 13:53 |
Punk band Typically Norman played well also, although some of the singing sounded a bit too forced. Nevertheless, the crowd enjoyed their set and visually the band seemed to enjoy their performance, making their set a lot more interesting from a spectator’s perspective. The hawaiian outfits amused all. Off Limits once again impressed the crowd with confident singing and guitar playing. Their parents seemed to be cheering the loudest, which is quite a feat considering the number of fans supporting them. Although some is work needed on vocal tuning, I would be very surprised if they didn’t do much better next year. They are definitely an upcoming local talent.
13:53, winners of heat 5, played a mature set with strong vocals from lead singer Joe Richomme. Michael Dryden, bassist, said “I think revolt should enjoy their winnings. There was a surprise down the line as to who should have won but I think Omerta should have done better.” 13:53 hope to enter again next year, and have already spent one of their prizes - £100 gift voucher for Island Music – on a cymbal for their new drummer, Amy, who also did well with imaginative drumming. The problem with getting random people to judge is that it is very subjective; some of us are perhaps more knowledgeable in certain genres. Perhaps this is a lesson for future BOB’s. Nevertheless; well done Revolt! |
