Omerta lead singer

Controversy at BOB as Metal beats Indie.

by Andy de Castro
Revolt were crowned '2006 Jersey junior band of the year' after the final Battle of the Bands took place at Chicago rock on Tuesday night.

Despite feelings amongst the crowd that they were not the deserved winners, Revolt won the first prize of five paid gigs at Chicago Rock. Typically Norman and Omerta also performed at the final, whilst 13:53 and Off Limits were the favourites to win.

The final result was a tie of 41.5 out of 50 between Revolt and 13.53. The judges then had a majority vote of 3 to 2 for Revolt to win. Therefore, 13.53 won the second prize of a £100 voucher for Island Music.

Battle of the Bands crowd
BOB Crowd

Playing a set of punk rock genre and sporting luminescent outfits, Revolt entertained the crowd although much of it dispersed when they played. The remaining audience, though, moshed and listened though I couldn’t make out any lyrics.

One listener said, “I can’t believe that they won heat 3, never mind the final. It just goes to show that the judges had no idea.”

Being a judge on the final, I did find that some of the other scores were a little bizarre.
Omerta ambitiously played an all-original set which impressed the crowd. The general consensus was that they should have come at least third.

"I think revolt should enjoy their winnings"
Michael Dryden, 13:53

Punk band Typically Norman played well also, although some of the singing sounded a bit too forced. Nevertheless, the crowd enjoyed their set and visually the band seemed to enjoy their performance, making their set a lot more interesting from a spectator’s perspective. The hawaiian outfits amused all.

Off Limits once again impressed the crowd with confident singing and guitar playing. Their parents seemed to be cheering the loudest, which is quite a feat considering the number of fans supporting them. Although some is work needed on vocal tuning, I would be very surprised if they didn’t do much better next year. They are definitely an upcoming local talent.

Junior Band

13:53, winners of heat 5, played a mature set with strong vocals from lead singer Joe Richomme. Michael Dryden, bassist, said “I think revolt should enjoy their winnings. There was a surprise down the line as to who should have won but I think Omerta should have done better.” 13:53 hope to enter again next year, and have already spent one of their prizes - £100 gift voucher for Island Music – on a cymbal for their new drummer, Amy, who also did well with imaginative drumming.

The problem with getting random people to judge is that it is very subjective; some of us are perhaps more knowledgeable in certain genres. Perhaps this is a lesson for future BOB’s.

Nevertheless; well done Revolt!

typically norman should have won, they were the best! x

You
The Revolt should get their rat's out next time they are on stage.

Mr. Clever
I think that next year the judges should be musicians - it makes it a bit pointless getting members of the media to judge as its just like getting any member of the public - the media dont necessarily know anything about music and how to judge it! Also, perhaps a decent venue would be an improvement as Chicago Rock dont seem to have a clue as how to mix live music. And it would also be better if the judges didnt drink whilst they are meant to be judging because then they have even less of a clue to whats going on and the result is that the 'best' under 18 band is the revolt! What a load of rubbish.

The Revolt rocked so hard they deserved to win give them a break they were the best! The Revolt are unique and won fair and square those rumours were rubbish if anyone wants to start a rumour they should at least make it believable!! anyways until next time peeps p.s. The Revolt rock peace out ya'll

Will
Why are you cussing the revolt, they are a great band and deserved to win, if you think you are such a good judge then why dont you say who should have won heat 3, Zodiak, hum? Dont think so!

Eddy
I agree, Revolt shouldn't have won. But they did, and there's nothing we can do about it. Come on judges - what's the deal...?

Tom
Nice report, good to see a realistic approach to this competition. I believe the judges should have some criteria to work with instead of simply giving a mark out of 10, otherwise the correct result may not prevail. It would also be helpful if all of the judges had a half-decent knowledge of music, and perhaps even...play an instrument...? Oh well, until next year chaps!

Lala
I'm glad The Revolt won (Why do they keep getting called just, Revolt? It's quite annoying.)I think they deserved it I know how much work they put into it and people saying rumours like "One of them was related to a judge" and "They paid the judges." Is completely idiotic. Although I was also surpirsed as many people were at them winning, I wasn't rude enough to leave. Give them support, they themselves are surprised they won. Well done The Revolt.
