I have been to Jersey 3 times and if wasn't so expensive to get to would be there every year. The view from the pub at Portlet Bay is my first thought of Jersey,it is stunning. My mother and her friend are there at the moment, they never tire of the island.(Yes I do watch repeats of Bergerac just so I can say " I've been there. " )to anyone or myself (sad I know)
willow
before bergerac jersey was a sweater
Sue
What about a burst Bubble as an icon.It would depict the bubble that has burst for Jersey...
Matt
Having been brought up in Jersey, I can't believe no one has mentioned Black Butter or Bean Crock!!
Ian
Having been to Silver Springs (Hi to Jason so u flogged it !!!! poor ronni) in the early eighties , it has to be snogging girls at St.Brelards Bay. Also those dark dank bunkers holding memories of the past. My fav the lavinder farm !!!!

Alan whickerGIVE ME A BREAK!!!
Gumby
Alan whicker? you must be havin a laugh he is such a toffee nosed begger.I hate snobs and Alan whicker fits the bill.
Alan Wicker Fan
why i wonder is alan wicker not mentioned in the list? He has travelled all over the world and loves jersey so much to settle here. So lets here it for Lovely Mr Alan Wicker folks much better than Bergerac dont you think????????
neddy
My fathers underpants should be an icon as they always have the map of jersey on.
Sunbather
The lovely Alan Wicker should definitely be a top ten icon for Jersey he has travelled the world and lives in lovely white house in Jersey or perhaps Lily Langtree or Jersey Cow/Milk/cream which is scruptiouliscious. Bergerac is a good name for the airport but hardly feel that it should be a top ten icon as it was a tv series tnat was on tv a long time ago and not everyone will know it and feel that Alan Wicker should be an Icon in the topten or Lily Langtree or Gerald Durrell as he has done a great deal for Jersey with his conservation centre for animals etc and the gorgeous Jersey Cow and its cream (Yummy)
orko
No cows!! they get to much publicity now. The local paper has them in every night and its an old fashioned thing that the island clings on too.Jersey holds on to far to many old ideas and should invest in new attractions it seriously needs an update not hanging on too the past.
katherine
bergerac is rubbish i think it should be the jersey cow because ITS WHAT MAKES JERSEY WHAT IT IS TODAY!!! :D
Karen
Corbierre lighthouse, without a doubt, saviour of many lives, beautiful edifice, remarkable landmark.

Well...let's see now. There is the Jersey cow, Jersey new potatos,Jersey sweaters, Jersey pink granite, Jersey butter, Jersey Cream, Jersey girls.
My great grand father and I do a great deal of traveling around the world and I have noticed on occasion just how often he can pick up 'The Ladies" in countries just by mentioning Jersey cows, sweaters or potatos.
Who knew that these sorts of things could be so stimulating to women? Interesting that? Of course my great grand father has always been interested in Jersey cows.
I remember when I was but a lad and great grand father and I would take walks around St Helier and he would point every now and then and say, "Look at that cow over there." or "Stupid fat cow!"
Well, as you can imagine, I thought that he was a little dottie, for when I would look in the dirrection he was pointing, there wouldn't be any cows at all!
So on reflection I don't think that I would want a cow (No matter how utterly pretty it may be.) as a Jersey icon due to my great grand fathers apparent hatered of all things cowish iether real or imaginary.
As far as Bergerac is concerned, I hardly feel that some half witted detective really constitutes as a wonderful icon of our beautiful Jersey? Sounds like a bottle of wine that has gone slightly off.
"Waiter! This bottle of wine has gone Bergerac! Kindly bring me another." Besides, in all my great grand father's and I's travels, I really can't remember a single soul knowing who or what a Bergerac is.
I can just imagine people from all over the world fighting over the last seat on a plane so that they can come to Jersey to see the latest re-runs of Bergerac.
Can't you see it now. "But darling, wouldn't you rather go a see the Eiffel Tower?" "NO! If we don't go to Jersey and watch re-runs of Bergerac I'm going to hold my breath until we do!"
??????
um why is the jersey cow on there? the cow is cool tho but who is that person at the top??

I also think of Bergerac when I think of Jersey, but my favourite holiday destination. By the way Clive Liron the main star of Bergerac is actually Cornish not English, and we are very proud of him
Tracy Green
As a non-residen, whenever I think of Jersey I Bergerac always comes to mind. Especially with all the re-runs on TV at the moment. What a fantastic advertisement for the island!

Ryan (Host)
Clive. We run this vote over about three weeks. First we asked people to send in nominations. Then we took the icons with the most nominations (20 or so) and then opened it to a public vote.
So if you don't think Bergerac is right as the number 2 icon then you should speak to other islanders about why they voted and nominated that way.
Bergerac actually got the most nominations but was beaten by the Jersey Cow in the vote.
Clive Liron
Why Bergerac. I know that it was made on the Island but the main star was an Englishman Stick to Jersey first
Stephanie Gurschke

i love Gorey
i agree with 'Monkey'... Gorey is the heart of the island, when the gorey fete arrives, it's like disneyland in the South East of Jersey. Also, someone should put nets in those goals on gorey common, then that would be the icing on the cake.
Ryan
I would like to nominate the Jersey Cow as my Icon for Jersey.
She is everything Jersey should be and means so much to the island as a whole.

It's got to be the Jersy Cow; famous the world over.

just the sound of the bergerac tune makes me think of Jim driving around Jersey, the wrong way, in his open top car. I used to look forward to seeing locations and people that I knew.
Scott Mills
Icon....no question...it's hate for all things related to guernsey
Mark Machlan
I think it should be lilly langtree. I thought she was well fit and i'd have done her
Steve Rowland
I think it's Hungry Man, without doubt best bacon and egg sarny in northern hemisphere
Anton Swemmer
I think jersey icon without doubt is ally dally! we all know what he was famous for. I want to follow in his footsteps

I chose the Jersey cow because it leads onto Jersey milk, cream, butter & (is it still made) ice cream!

the Bergerac series is what brought the island to my attention many years ago..i have since spent many lovely holidays there
Alistair
It has to be the shape of the island -its own unique identity that is the most noteable.

"GT" makes a reference to "all those Polish ladies." Can anyone make a reference to ladies of other nationalities they find exciting and who live on the island?
Ross N
Probably being pedantic, but isn't it actually Craupaud?
As for the icon, no question, the best cows in the world!

everyone seems to have overlooked the obvious winner...the steam clock.

Was going to say Jambo but I see there's no point as you already have your shortlist. You should advertise the polls in more places.
When on holiday in America the only 'Icon' from Jersey that they'd recognise was Jambo. Forget Bergerac etc. And don't even think that Ya Kwanza will ever be as big, famous or handsom as Jambo. So I've put a vote for Gerald Durrell since it's closest.
The other things I would have said was, our Dolmens, Leylines, connection to 'The crucible', and some of the ghost stories are great...Forget 'The Others'...do a horror with a bunch of our real stories and folklore
John
Are you Californian by any chance Sam? There not as good as the beaches in Normandy though.
Vivien
It has to be the Jersey Cow! Also, are they really getting rid of the Gordon's Gin sign? I can't believe it! That is an icon in its own right!
catherine
crapaud - they are getting squashed in St Ouen

Susan Armstrong
Ithink that the Jersey cow should be the Jersey icon as it has been famous for years and years.
Florence
I've been sailing quite often to Jersey, well, I never heard about Bergerac -which is rather, for me, a famous city in France. I would say: the Jersey creamy ice-creams, but, because you find pictures of ice-creams worldwide, so, the Cow itself. And why not the Cow with a map showing the castles, the beaches, the splendid zoo etc. in the background? I think the icon must make you think 1) It is Jersey 2) I'd like to go to this place.

Im currently at University but have lived in Jersey my whole life. In my opinion it's the Jersey Cow, can't possibly be anything else.

It has got to be the Jersey Cow - beautiful, instantly recognisible, productive, helpful - just like Jersey.
Andy Burke
A cabbage is not quite the same as a good looking cow. What on earth does the bloody cabbage say to the world if it becomes a jersey icon, its a bit naff.

"Mention 'Bergerac' and the whole world says Jersey"! Yeah right, I grew up in Singapore and never heard of it till I moved to the UK and then here!
Mitch
Fort Regent - possibly the ugliest buiding I've ever seen - it's so bad that it's almost good.
Ian
I know it is about to be changed .... but the 'Gordons Gin ' sign at the bottom of Beaumont has to be one of our icon's .... doesn't it?
The place will not be the same without it.
Steph
Surely it has to be the Battle of Flowers
PJ
Bergerac is a vote for Midsummer!!! How about real Jersey icons and not media imports.

My icon would be either a Jersey Cow or a Jersey Cabbage Walking Stick, both are unique items to Island.
Bryan
I can think of nothing better than the Jersey Cow or Jersey Wonder. Both remind me of Holidays with my Grandparents.
Jane
I agree with Angela, Mont Orgueil castle. Does that translate to Mount pride?
The Jersey cow would get my second vote.
Darren Le Geyt
What is needed is a definition of the icon. Is it to be what is most symbolic to people in Jersey or those overseas, I would hope it were the former.
Most people around the world know of the Jersey cow, though few are aware of Jersey itself.
Many have heard of Jersey as a tax haven. That, or an odd peculiarity with a ridiculously insular goverment with an un-elected killjoy presiding over it.
Locals will stick with the Crapaud, bean crock, wonders, ormers, cabbage loaf and the Jersey cabbage.
I am a little dismayed that nobody mentioned Wace, Millais or Lillie Langtry.
As for Bergerac it is all best forgotten as temporary insanity.
What about the increadible historic richness of the island? La Hougue Bie, the castles, the language, links to Brittany and Normandy and the Occupation.
However, for my money the most iconic thing about Jersey has to be the scenery. The valleys and the cliffs but most especially the beaches. If only we could tow Jersey to the Med and avoid French control it would be the No.1 holiday destination in the world. Though we would have to reduce alcohol and cigarette taxes...

These are the things mentioned to me by friends and family visitors:-
The general clean appearance, i.e. no advertising hoardings and no graffiti.
The friendliness of the locals.
Our pound note.
Filter-in-turns.
And, they ALWAYS want to be taken to find some of our beautiful Jersey cows.
John Ellis-Mourant
Far from me to be cynical - but I can't help wondering about the coincidence of this poll just before BERGERAC IS RELEASED ON DVD - see www.bbcshop.com
Not that I'm complaining I'll be buying it, just thought I ought to mention it:))
Other icon thoughts include Jersey Wonders, the Liberation Tapestry, Corbierre Lighthouse, Martello towers, German Bunkers and many others. Surely some of these rate more highly on a list than Bergerac - much as it was fantastic I'd question to what extent it defined Jersey? A programe about a fictional character in a fiction department in an unreal setting - at least one murder every couple of days and a police station that was at least 5 different buildings on the island?!:)
Angela Trigg
I think our beautiful Mont Orgueil castle shows the strength and character of the Island.

All good in Britain, but what, with the exception of the cow (and that is limited), gives Jersey an international perspective? I did not grow up in the channel islands or the UK for that matter and I had never heard of Bergerac or a Jersey Royale before I got to Jersey! I think the term "tax haven" is how the wider world knows Jersey.
