Interviews

Dave Davies

Dave Davies

Dave Davies was the guitarist in the 60s uber group The Kinks, he talks to Carrie Cooper about being a kink, his solo projects and Coca-Cola.

Carrie Cooper caught up with former Kinks guitarist Dave Davies about life as a Kink and his current solo projects.

In the interview they kick off by talking about his childhood and how his house was always full of music, Dave mentions how he got his first guitar at ten and practiced all the time.

They talk about how he shredded the speaker cone in his amp to give the guitar a raunchy distorted sound because he was fed up with the sound of guitars at the time.

"I was fed up with the guitar sounds of the time so I got an amp from the local radio shop and got a razor blade and sliced the cone of the speaker."

Carrie asks Dave about the volatile relationship between Dave and his brother Ray and how it effected their stage performances and the endurance of the band.

Dave talks about how he used to wear a sword and long boots when he went out but that his sword was confiscated by the bands manager because Dave tried to attack the manager with it.

They then finish on the fact that the opening line of 'Lola' was supposed to be "I met her in a club down in old Soho where you drink champagne and it tastes just like Coca-Cola" instead of "Cherry Cola".

According to Dave it was changed because the BBC thought Coca-Cola was to commercial so Ray had to fly back to London from New York and back again to change the song so that the BBC would play it.

We finish the interview with the first 20 seconds of the original Lola so you can hear it as the Kinks originally intended - oh how times have moved on!

The interview was originally broadcast on BBC Radio Jersey as part of the afternoon show with Carrie Cooper.
