Crowds gathering for the Film Festival
Crowds gathering before the film begins

Jersey Film Festival 2005

By Bryony le Boutillier
Every night since Saturday 14th August, films have been showing from 8.30pm onwards in Howard-Davis park; the six day run of classic films was a massive success with the people of Jersey.

The film festival got off to an imperfect start with the show scheduled for the first night being cancelled due to the bad weather and the risk of lightning.

Teenagers enjoying the film
Every one enjoyed the Festival

Fortunatley, (depending on your taste in films,) Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was re-scheduled for Wednesday night replacing Chicago, the organisers explained that they really wanted to show Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, “for the children”.

Aside from that minor hiccup the film festival went smoothly, Moulin Rouge kicked off the week on Sun 14th followed by the ever popular Grease on Monday, Shrek2  was shown on Tuesday and the relocated Chitty Chitty Bang Bang on the Wednesday.

Gene Kelly’s Singing in the rain was viewed the following day and Andrew Lloyd Webbers, Phantom of the Opera was the grand finale on the Friday.

"Its fun and its free!"
Local Jersey teen

The festival has consisted mainly of musicals; the exception to the rule being Shrek 2, (I heard no complaints myself- it seemed to be enjoyed just as much as the rest!) but then again while it’s not a musical, it isn’t short of songs to keep the audience amused.

One of the great successes of the week was definitely Grease, the crowd was huge and from the response, it could have been a live performance; singing along, dancing and applause all showed the audience enthusiasm.

Though there was a real mix of films being shown, the films shown were undeniably all classics and the film festival has been a massive success, with hundreds of people of all ages, turning out each night and enjoying the free entertainment with their friends and family.

The verdict I got from teenagers: "Its a great idea!", "Its fun and its free!", "I hope they do it again next year!" Seems pretty positive if you ask me!

Ever thought about turning it into a true film festival..? i.e. independant film makers entering their films, which would then be judged and awarded etc? obviously still include the main feature as a crowd pleaser, but it would still be interesting to make it something bigger
