Valentines at the Q Bar

In the last few weeks every time I’ve spoken to anyone about the local music scene there is one band I’m told I HAVE to see.

The Valentines have built a massive hype around themselves, I’m told by other bands “these guys are awesome” by promoters that “they really have something special” and generally that I should make the effort to catch a gig.

The problem with seeing a band with hype around them for the first time is that they usually disappoint, the more hype a band has, the more they need to live up to.

Watching a band play in the Q Bar is like sitting in someone’s living room but with dozens of sofas, a bar and a giant screen.

The band plays in a clearing, in front of the screen, on the same level as the audience; this meant that because it was Glastonbury weekend, The Valentines had Razorlight on the screen behind them.

I think I’ve written enough to build up the sort of anticipation I had while waiting for them to actually get out there and start playing. The Valentines are good guys and I really didn’t want to be disappointed, I hate writing a crap review.

Fortunately there was no chance of disappointment, the minute they started playing I was hooked, Jegard is the ultimate front man – full of energy, adrenaline and talent – he was bouncing about so much it left me feeling shattered.

These guys are the dog’s donuts; they played a blinding set that left the muted Razorlight looking like a dead light bulb – insignificant.

I’m not going to pigeon hole them by telling you who they sound like, they’re too good for that but it was an ‘awesome’ punk rock set with so much energy and buzz that if they were on the first floor they might have fallen through.

This is a band with the right look, sound and attitude to instantly grab your attention and then not let you, they leave you wanting more.

The Valentines where one of the bands selected to play Jersey Live 2005 and they really are going to be one of the highlights of the night – along with all the other brilliant local bands selected of course!

If you only see one band in the next month make it the Valentines, there are two opportunities to catch them in July.

You can catch the Valentines at the Tipsy Toad Town House on 23 July and at Chicago Rock Café on 27 July.

To be fair to Jersey’s other brilliant bands try and get out to see as many bands as you can, use our weekly gig roundup to find the best place to go and who to see.

im not a fan of the libertines but i do think " horror show " is a classic :)

I dont think they sound like the libs at all. Their sound is very american, the libs are very english.

It seems the Valentines are attempting to fill the void left when the Libertines expired by sounding exactly like them in every single way. If there's a more calculatingly cynical cash-in of a band currently clinging on to Pete Docherty's coat tails, I don't think I've heard them.

I saw the valentines at Jersey Live i thought they were really, really good. anoyone who wants to hear them, they are playing with us and the de nova blues on saturday 17th at the Havana Club

Get to the Havana Club on Saturday 24 September to catch The Valentines EP launch party where you can hear The Valentines, Benny the Moth and Kudu play. Tickets are £6 in advance and £7 on the door with each ticket holder getting a numbered Valentines EP.

the valentines are wicked! I spoke to them after the gig on Friday at live lounge and they are lovely guys. Plus jegard is hot! I reckon theyll wipe the floor at the festival.

I saw the valentines on friday at Pure, and was really impressed. I'm from nr manchester and i see new indie bands all the time, but the valentines seem different somehow. They have the right image and sound, and catchy tunes and they actually bothered to talk to the people who'd gone there to see them. I'd really like a CD/tape, if anyone can help me out there i'd be grateful, Cheers

Their gig at Millbrook was cool. I hadnt seen then before that and they were awesome.

I live in London and I see alot of rubbish indie bands - the difference with these guys is they have TUNES. the quality of songs I dont think are ten a penny. I think theyre one in a million. still, the EP isnt as good as they are live.

They might be new and good for jersey but thats it, bands like these are ten a penny in the uk

First time I saw them (I think it was there first gig) you couldnt even hear them, they were rotten. I saw them the other week and was blown away. Great review, and definitely desrved. Good luck for the jersey live guys!

I thoroughly concur. The Valentines are arguably the greatest band from Jersey ever, and Jegard undoubtedly the most handsomest and best frontperson in the history of Rock on the Island. Next stop: the mainland! Go Valentines!

We hadnt practised in a month though dont forget...Jordan came back from Uni that very night so we were very rusty...I'm just surprised we didn't make more mistakes!

Thinking back now I sort of agree about the bands timing but in the Q Bar you don't really notice it.

Also with such great songs and so much energy you don't really notice THAT much.

They need to sort it by Jersey Live though - but plenty of gigging between now and then should fix that.

theyve definitely got the songs (very catchy, Ive had that stars one in my head for three days!) and the stage presence, but I agree with Dug they were a bit messy. They need to get tighter.

I agree on the Starge act part, but feel there talent ends there. I just don't feel there that tight as a bad with mistakes regularly made in timming. But hey maybe that's the effect they are looking for

Totally agree...valentines are the best band Ive seen in a long long time...and Jegard is the hottest frontman, very charismatic. The guitarist rocks out so much, its awesome! cant wait for Jersey live! Xx
