40 years and still going strong

This year Bob Simmons is set to become the first rider ever to compete in the Manx Grand Prix for forty consecutive years.

I first competed on the TT Mountain course in 1968 and I have not missed a year since.

My preparations for the MGP are the same every year.

I work hard on my fitness over the year and keep my bike in good condition but the most important thing is concentration. You have to stay very focused to do well in qualification and ultimately the races.

After forty years it is business as usual.

This year the Manx Riders Association is holding a night to recognise my involvement in the MGP.

I am looking forward to meeting up with the other riders, it is a great time to swap stories.

From a classic racing point of view, I would say that slight changes to the course and the road surface have made the course slightly quicker over the years, but it still takes the same level of determination to compete.

The nature and length of the circuit means that there will always be areas that need to be modified from year to year.

The best part of the MGP is undoubtedly the friendly atmosphere.

The more experienced riders will always help out the new comers, offering advise on where they are going wrong or improvements they can make.

But if you get in the way on the road, you will receive a stern word or two, this has not changed over the years.

I think it takes a few years to learn the bends and another year before you can say you know your way around the course.

You need one hundred percent concentration at all times.

The best advice I have received down the years has come from legends like Joey Dunlop and Mike Hailwood.  The advise was, “ride at your own pace, relax and the speed will come.”

Basically if you try to hard you will end up going slower.

My ultimate goal is to enjoy the challenge and to achieve the perfect lap.
