Christian in the Mix

From Scarlett Point to Buenos Aires

Christian tells us how his passion for progressive house music has been inspired by the atmospheric Manx landscape.

I first got interested in house music listening to DJs such as Sasha, Pete Tong and Paul Oakenfold. They could be heard regularly on Radio 1 via the Essential Selection and latterly the Essential Mix.

The music was fresh, new and a bit rebellious.

I was living up near South Barrule at the time and the music seemed to complement and even enhance the landscapes. Soon after I bought a pair of record decks and started to mix music.

Through University I met up with a whole new group of people who were interested in the same style of music.

"It is quite humbling the DJs I was inspired by are now playing our records."

It was at this time that the dream of starting my own label began to seem a possibility. In the early 2000s I started up my own project called Source of Gravity.

With the new digital era someone with a laptop and access to the Internet can listen to my tracks anywhere in the World. This meant that I could run the label from the Isle of Man.

The music we are making could be enjoyed sat on a beach at Fleshwick or going for a walk in a plantation, not just in nightclubs, as it complements most situations.

One of our latest releases is called Scarlett Point and has been played by some of the biggest DJs in the industry. Steve McGrath, a local DJ/producer worked with me on the track, and Sterio & McGrath – Scarlett Point was born.

It is quite humbling the DJs I was inspired by are now playing our records.

Some people on the Island may not know much about my music and Source of Gravity, but Paul Van Dyk regularly plays our records in his sets and he has been voted the World’s no 1 by DJ Magazine in the World for the last 2 years.

My aim for the future is to keep releasing, making and producing quality music, whilst travelling with the project.

Have Your Say

Which other songs have been inspired by the Manx landscape?

The BBC reserves the right to edit comments submitted.

Robert
Your inspiration is one that would benefit loads of youngsters here and abroad

Gary
The internet is a fantastic tool for Manx musicians. In the past the Irish Sea was a major barrier to getting Manx talent noticed, but now that's closed right up. Top stuff indeed.

Next Navigation party i am playing in Castletown is the Ship Inn (top room) - 3rd May - 9pm onwards....

Thanks for all the support for the article, i've just been out the USA playing at events and producing some new music. Happy to say Sterio & McClellan - Langness is close to completion and always got a great reaction @ Tutto Mundo, Charlotte, NC....

Christian Steriopulos

This is seriously good music. Play a set out if you get the chance. It would be so good to get all the people who stand at the side of dance floors to have a dance. I agree that dance music can be enjoyed far away from a crowded club as well. Keep going with the music.

Gary
Great piece. Stez, you deserve all the credit you are getting. Reminds me of when you started (1994?)..and those words of Pete Tong on Radio 1: "Wishing Sterio good luck on his new turntables, from Gary and the Isle of Man GANG!". Classic

The Milhausen
Nice Work Mr. Sterio!!

Thanks for the great feedback. I'll pass it on to Steve as well. With regards to playing out i have in the past but there's nothing much club wise going on the Isle of Man at the moment. Email me at sourceofgravity@manx.net if you would like some tracks etc.

Naomi
Just YES !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Isle of Man finally looking cool. Keep it going. We are not all living in the 18th Century. We do love dance music too.
