Liaison Officers bear family pain

Unsung Heroes

Family liaison officers are the unsung heroes of the police force. They are the Police Officers who often have to break difficult news to families about the death of a loved one.

But their job extends far beyond tea and sympathy as David Whiteley finds out when he spends time with an officer in Northamptonshire.

Family Liaison Officers all have day jobs within the police force, until they’re called upon to change their role.

Whether they are faced with the very sad job of helping a family through the death of a loved one on the road, or the challenge of a murder case, they report directly to the Senior Investigating Officer.

What they learn from a family can be vital to solving a case.
