Joe Crowley

Joe Crowley goes behind the story.

Joe Crowley on Obesity

Inside Out has been following Adele Wyatt from Southampton, as she has life-changing surgery to deal with her obesity. Joe Crowley reflects on what the past few months with Adele have been like...

Joe writes...

Now it’s tempting to delve into cliché and write that 'Adele’s been on an incredible journey' or mention 'the struggle' Adele’s been through over the 'past few months'.

But to be honest those sentiments slightly belittle the fact this is an ongoing 'journey' and, in many ways, an unending 'struggle'.

Attitude to food

The reality is Adele will never eat another normal meal again. Ever.

And that’s where I really sympathise because although Adele and I are different in many ways, we both really love our food.

The cameras are gone but Adele's struggle goes on

I’m aware it’s borderline bad taste to go on about food in relation to Adele.

But the truth is that food brought us together and helped us bond during our numerous filming days.

I think Adele was impressed (and amused) by our capacity to put away some fairly hefty, regular meals

Yes, it’s not just me, the producer and cameraman are equally guilty although I have a particular talent for getting the donuts while filming.

Candid

Obviously, we didn’t indulge in food in some contrived attempt to make friends with Adele, but when she asked, we were less than shy about our cravings.

And in some small way I suspect this helped Adele feel less of an exception and made her more relaxed about her own weakness for food, in particular, take away.

In turn, Adele was very candid with us and I think it’s her bold honesty that makes her films so compelling.

And it’s been a bit weird saying goodbye to Adele after following her progress since surgery.

Courage and strength

In this job we’re occasionally privileged to be allowed very personal and intense access into someone’s life and when this happens you get to know an individual well and they get used to having you around.

So when it all ends both sides can feel a little bereft.

But Adele has shown phenomenal courage and strength to address her weight problems and to share her thoughts and feelings with us throughout.

Now we’ve switched the cameras off we all wish Adele the very best adapting to her new life and continuing to liberate herself through weight loss.
