One of the BBC's public purposes (as set out in the Royal Charter and Agreement) includes taking a leading role in the switchover to digital TV.

As part of this, the BBC has to build up a network of digital TV transmitters so that, when the switchover is complete, the majority of UK households can receive our TV services through an aerial. Around 98.5% of households have been able to receive analogue TV and we have to make sure that the same proportion can receive digital TV through an aerial.

We have now produced a coverage plan setting out how we are going to broadcast our TV services after switchover, with full technical details of the digital TV transmission network. The plan, which is published below, was approved by the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport on 31 October 2008. It will be updated once a year as the design for the transmission network is completed.
