President of the Maldives resigns

Mohamed Nasheed, a former political prisoner, took office in 2008.

The president of the Maldives, Mohamed Nasheed, has resigned.

He made the announcement on national television following weeks of protest after he controversially ordered the arrest of the country's top criminal court judge, Justice Abdulla Mohamed.

Mr Nasheed accused the judge of favouring opposition politicians such as Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, the previous president of thirty years.

The vice president is expected to take over.

Presiden Maladewa Mohamed Nasheed telah mengundurkan diri.

Dia mengumumkan pengunduran diri lewat televisi nasional menyusul unjuk rasa selama berminggu-minggu setelah secara kontroversial dia memerintahkan penangkapan hakim tertinggi pengadilan pidana, Hakim Abdulla Mohamed.

Nasheed menuduh hakim mendukung para politisi oposisi seperti Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, mantan presiden yang berkuasa selama 30 tahun.

200 Dickens

Royal Mail issues stamps to mark Dicken's birthday.

The two-hundredth anniversary of the birth of Charles Dickens is being celebrated across the world today (Tuesday).

A ceremony will be held at his birthplace, Portsmouth on the south coast of England.

His works, such as 'David Copperfield', 'Oliver Twist' and 'Great Expectations', remain widely read and are regularly adapted for the screen.

He died in 1870 and was buried in Westminster Abbey in London, where Prince Charles will lay a wreath in the presence of what's likely to be the largest-ever gathering of the writer's descendants.

Dickens was a keen observer and his stories frequently portray the fate of ordinary people, often living in abject poverty and squalor through no fault of their own.

200 tahun Dickens

Peringatakan kelahiran ke-200 Charles Dickens dirayakan di seluruh penjuru dunia hari ini (Selasa).

Upacara akan diadakan di kota kelahirannya, Portsmouth, di pesisir selatan Inggris.

Karya-karyanya, seperti David Copperfield, Oliver Twist dan Great Expectations masih dibaca oleh banyak orang dan sering diadaptasi ke layar lebar.
