Episode Guide: The Story of the Guitar

Posted: Monday, 6th October 2008

Beginning with the rise of the acoustic guitar, the series takes us from an ancient Middle Eastern ancestor of the lute, to the iconic guitars draped around the necks of Bill Hailey and Elvis Presley.

In the second programme Alan traces the development of the electric guitar. The investigation takes us from the blues of the Mississippi to the guitar wars of the 1950s, when the Fender Stratocaster and the Gibson Les Paul were battling for supremacy.

In the final programme of the series guitarists talk about how they find their own sound, and how the guitar has changed their lives. Alan Yentob speaks to Tony Iommi, David Gilmour, Pete Townshend, Slash, Johnny Marr, The Edge and many others.

The Story of the Guitar: Sunday 5th, 12th and 19th October, BBC One, 10.20pm
