MARTIN LUTHER KING He was born in January 15, 1929. Civil rights leader. He delivered his last speech during a bitter sanitation workers' strike in Memphis on April 3, 1968. The following evening, April 4, he was assassinated.
Martin Luther King was born in Alabama in the United States of America in 1929. At 15 he was selected for a special programme for gifted children and went to college. He got a degree in divinity and became a Baptist minister. He immediately joined the fight for black rights - but he wanted peaceful protests. He organized a boycott of the buses. Black people refused to ride on the buses - they boycotted them. In the end, the bus company gave in, and the black people could sit anywhere they wanted. It convinced him that peaceful protest was the best way. He organized sit-ins, too - whereby protesters would peacefully occupy an area set aside for white people. Martin Luther King: "I am happy to join with you today, in what will go down in history as the greatest demonstration for freedom in the history of our nation."
