Born November 30, 1874, the eldest son of Randolph Churchill.
Churchill died on January 24, 1965.

	Lesson 1

Winston Churchill showed no early signs of greatness. He was a stubborn boy and … a poor student. He spent four years at Harrow, one of England's finest public
schools, at the very bottom of his class. Even when he decided to go to Sandhurst, the Royal Military Academy, it took him three attempts to pass the entrance exam.

Although he was not there as a soldier, Churchill insisted on taking part in the fighting and was captured by the Boers. A month later he made a daring escape, crossing hundreds of miles of enemy territory to reach the British lines. When he returned to England, he was a hero.

It was a turbulent career. Churchill opposed Chamberlain's policy of appeasement. In the thirties' he was one of very few politicians, who spoke out vigorously against Hitler. But only after 1939, when Germany invaded Poland, others were ready to listen to him. When a new leader for a wartime coalition government was needed, Churchil was chosen.

Churchill:
