PANDIT JAWAHARLAL NEHRU Known as Pandit 'Teacher' Nehru. Indian statesman and prime minister (1947--64). Born in Allahabad, India, the son of Motilal Nehru. He became India's first prime minister and minister of external affairs in 1947.
Nehru joined his father's legal firm, but in 1916 he gave up law to concentrate on his political career. He started a newspaper and began to press for independence from the British Empire. Nehru: "I was simply bowled over by Gandhi. He was like a beam of light that pierced the darkness." In 1935 Britain passed the Government of India Bill. This bill enabled India to set up it's own democratically elected government, but fell short of giving India full independence. In 1939 the British took India into the war with them. This caused a split in Indian politics. All the district governors resigned in protest. The calls for independence increased and, by the end of the war, independence was a certainty. Nehru: "At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom."
