NELSON MANDELA

Born July 18, 1918, in Transkei, South Africa.
South African statesman, president (1994-1999).
Mandela retired in June 1999, maintaining his status as South Africa's most revered figure.

"Friends, comrades and fellow South Africans … I greet you all in the name of peace."

Nelson Mandela was born in 1918 in Umtata, South Africa. He qualified in law in 1942 and joined the African National Congress in 1944. He soon became one of the group's leaders and campaigned against the apartheid policies of the South African government.

In 1962 he was sent to prison on Robben Island. He stayed in prison for a total of 27 years, but was finally released in February 1990.

"Nelson Mandela is free. A huge crowd has been in the centre of the city impatient to hear him speak in public for the first time for more than a quarter of the century. As they waited, trouble broke out as police clashed with members of the crowd. But a few minutes ago the African nationalist leader began to speak.

Nelson Mandela:" …Friends, comrades and fellow South Africans…I greet you all in the name of peace."

"Today, the majority of South Africans, black and white, recognize that apartheid has no future. It has to be ended by our own decisive mass action in order to build peace and security."
