Millington Wolds

A trail of tranquility

A ground breaking partnership between two very different religious organisations is allowing people to enjoy the Yorkshire Wolds.

Aptly titled Tranquility Trail, the walk starts and finishes at the Madhyamata Buddhist Centre, at Kilnwick Percy Hall near Pocklington, and takes in views of the Yorkshire Wolds from Millington and Huggate to Thixendale.

Amongst the Wold sights are the Bronze Age earthworks at Huggate Dikes and Deepdale, which until now had been closed off to walkers.

The walk has been designed by the Long Distance Walkers’ Association (LDWA) and co-organised by the Madhyamata Buddhist Centre in Kilnwick Percy and St. Mary's Church at Thixendale.

John Davis of the LDWA’s East Yorkshire group said: “This is a community event which, as the name indicates, captures the peace and tranquility of a part of Britain that is not particularly well known and, on this occasion, incorporates some areas of spectacular beauty which are virtually unknown.”

The partnership between the two different religious organisations is very rare in the East Riding.

Kevin Thomson, the director of the Madhyamata Buddhist Centre said it was a novel experience for both groups:

"We had to negotiate and agree something with people whose temperament was a little bit different to ours but by no means wrong at all.

"There was an initial clash in personality and mind set but we were both very honest and I think it was that honesty between the two groups that made it easier in the end, because both parties are trying to do something good for the community."

The walk takes place annually and costs £10.50. For further information contact the Madhyamata Buddhist Centre on telephone: 01759 304832 or email: info@madhyamka.com.
