Among the major names on the billing include feminist icon Germaine Greer, the controversial MP George Galloway and award-winning writer Lionel Shriver. Also on the bill is novelist Jonathan Coe who will be presenting screenings of BS Johnson’s films 'Fat Man on A Beach' and 'You're Human Like the Rest of Them'. There are also talks by journalist John Pilger and psychotherapist Susie Orbach.

“We've got lots and lots of great projects this year.” said festival organiser Maggie Hannan. “This year we've programmed a lot more exhibitions, workshops and opportunities for local people to get involved with.” “I'm really looking forward to Louis De Berniere visiting the Central Library. He’s actually going to be playing his Mandolin. “Of course he wrote Captain Corelli's Mandolin, so we've been having a bit of a chuckle about that and wondering how that will go down.”

This year, organisers have added a new element to the festival. The Hull Art Lab is inviting people to try DIY publishing and book production as part of their new project The Bookville Publishathon. Other events and activities taking place during the festival include Creative Voice 06 providing a weekend of events and workshops for young people and a number of installations and art projects.
