Volunteers from Hull's Fairtrade shop

Sales pitch

Joan Venus-Evans : CSV volunteer
A Hull store with an unique perspective on selling is asking for volunteers to help run it.

Fairtrade Fortnight runs from March 6th-20th but the One World Shop in Hull needs volunteers all year round. The shop, which is situated on Waltham St. is an Aladdin's cave of Fairtrade products from around the world. The shop is packed with a range of goods from foodstuffs to greetings cards, jewellery, clothing and even musical instruments.

In our picture above you can see some of the volunteers who work in the Hull Shop, They are, from left to right. Michele Ditchburn, Mick Tite, Christine Church and Wendy Westwood.

I spoke to 'Charlotte', a  regular customer at One World who said, "I come here because the goods are of good quality and different from the high street.  Also, I know that by shopping here I'm supporting others."

The shop relies on volunteers for staff who perform a variety of tasks, organiser Christine Church said: "Volunteers could be doing anything from filling the shelves to serving customers or packing boxes for a sale or return service which is offered to groups and organisations in the area." Christine added: "Even half a day of a volunteer's time would be appreciated."

Michele Ditchburn began working in the shop last October.  She said: "I've always wanted to do something to help Fairtrade but was too busy."  She added; "When my circumstances changed, I decided to volunteer at the One World Shop and I love it."

Wendy Westwood, another volunteer must love it too as she's been a volunteer for many years. "I began working at the shop when I moved to Hull nine-and-a half years ago." said Wendy. "I was looking for a job at the time and a friend suggested helping out here, the rest is history."

Volunteering can be a great way of meeting people and using your time to help a good cause. The Fairtrade organisation helps many impoverished communities around the world to improve their quality of life by giving them a reasonable price for their produce.

If you're considering volunteering at the One World Shop you might want to look at their website to find out more.
