Two weekends of dance

Its twinkle toes aplenty in Hull this month with two weekends crammed full of performances, events, films and workshops in between.

The third annual dance festival, Two Weekends, takes place from 10th to 12th and 17th to 19th November with a varied programme of performances, workshops and film events taking place at various venues across the city.

International dancers are represented in the season with Latin American, Indian and Spanish flavours.

Tiempo de Tango will be performing Romance d’Carnaval on Sunday 12th November at the Horncastle Building, Hull College. Blending drama with film and music, 10 Latin American tango dancers will explore the roots and virtuosity of tango.

As part of their Bollywood season, the Ferens Art Gallery will present a series of Indian dance performances and lunchtime classes with their Cinema India: The Art of Bollywood touring exhibition.

The exhibition features over 70 posters including large-scale printed hoardings, some taken from London’s Victoria and Albert Museum collection. It captures the excitement and glamour of Bollywood, documenting the vibrant and visual culture of Indian film.

Leeds-based Indian dancer, Zoobin Surty will present 'Karma Dance' as part of this exhibition on Saturday 18th November.

The lunchtime Indian dance classes will be held at the Ferens Live Art Space on Wednesdays until December 20th, from 12.30pm to 1.30pm.

There are three specially commissioned performances. The first is by Yorkshire-based Place Prize 2006 finalist Lucy Suggate, who will present short performances demonstrating the use of props in live dance performances.

The second commission takes the theme of the body and the voice and features a performance called Corpus in Tone by the Leeds based dance company, Nordic Allure.

The final commission is by Leeds-based Resistance Movement who return to Hull with their new piece Shirt. The performance is a combination of sketches around everyday situations where people dance and let their imagination run loose in personal rituals, silly moves and fake moustaches.

The Creative Voice Youth Dance Platform will be showcasing talent from young people across Hull on Friday 17th November at the Horncastle Building.

As part of the festival, Hull Film will be presenting a two-part film programme exploring the marriage of dance, performance and film under the title, Dance Moves, at the Hull Screen.
