St. John of Bridlington
A stained glass window of St. John.

The mystery of St. John

By BBC's Chris Arundel.
An East Yorkshire clergyman is about to set off on a three month long quest to solve some mysteries about a Yorkshire Saint.

Saint John of Bridlington was born in the village of Thwing near Driffield in 1319. After studying at Oxford he came to Bridlington where he joined the religious community at the Bridlington Priory, later becoming Head Prior. He was canonised by pope Boniface XI in 1401. Apart from that little is known about him.

But now the rector of Bridlington Priory Church has been given permission to leave his normal job for three months to do more research into St. John of Bridlington's life.

Rev. John Wardle

"I had an appraisal and later asked the Bishop of Hull if I could have some time off to investigate St. John's life", said the very rev. John Wardle. "The Bishop was enthusiastic, so I'll start work on the project in May."

Mr. Wardle expects his inquiries will take him to Oxford, London and hopefully Rome. There he hopes to find more information about St. John including the papal "bull", confirming he was made a saint.

The findings will be published in a book called 'The Life, Times and Priory of St. John of Bridlington'.

The project is being funded through grants from Ecclesiastical Insurance and the Diocese of York.
