Stamford Bridge - Over Troubled Waters
Chris Arundel Stamford Bridge in East Yorkshire has plenty of reasons to celebrate. Including The famous battle of 1066 in which King Harold of England beat the Norwegians lead by Harald Hardrada.
"As residents breathed a collective "phew" it was decided to commemorate the completion of the flood alleviation scheme in some way. "

Flooding had always been a nuisance - but the record floods of November 2000 changed people's perceptions. The River Derwent burst it's banks and seriously flooded 30 businesses and homes. It also blocked the main A166 road between East Coast and North Yorkshire.
Sarah Rutherford's prize winning mug
Afterwards, the Yorkshire Regional Flood Defence Committee decided protecting Stamford Bridge from future flooding had to become a high priority and after some wrangling over which properties could be protected and which couldn't, a one kilometre long network of earth banks and flood walls was built at a cost of £3.7 million.
As residents breathed a collective "phew" it was decided to commemorate the completion of the flood alleviation scheme in some way. A special plaque has been installed and now commemorative mugs have gone on sale.
The Rutherford Family of Stamford Bridge
Eleven-year-old Sarah Rutherford from Stamford Bridge came up with the winning mug design. The mugs themselves are on sale at Roy Parsley's pottery. It was one of the worst affected properties during the floods of November 2000 but now, thanks to the new flood wall, it's safe.
