BBC Headstart
- Broadband Learning
Hull is the
home of broadband network which allows broadcast and new media content
to be used within new interactive, learning packages for schools and the
wider community.
BBC HeadStart
is the BBC’s exciting trial which focuses on new ways of learning using
leading edge technologies.
Computers
are recognised as the best way to provide interaction in schools and centres
where a teacher is on-hand to support the learners.
However,
Broadband to TV delivery allows learners to access content in the privacy
of their own home without the expense of having to buy a computer.
BBC HeadStart
is a new approach that has been developed to meet local educational needs
and support the great opportunities that exist at community level.
Led by local
schools, their teachers, pupils and parents; and developed with Hull CityLearning
and financially supported by Hull CityVision; BBC HeadStart is being trialed
for the first time in Hull’s Bransholme district.
Using BBC
content and expert support in the classroom and the community, this unique
partnership will deliver cutting-edge BBC HeadStart learning materials
using digital media.
By exploiting
the interactive facilities of broadband networks, the trial will combine
materials in one place – the TV or the PC - from the BBC’s wide range
of online, video and archive materials, all re-designed for broadband
delivery into the home via BBC Hull Interactive TV on Kingston Interactive
Television.
The trial
of BBC HeadStart supplies the following to schools and homes: BBC Bitesize
revision for children: the BBC’s award winning, on-demand, video-rich,
interactive packages which focus on rapid improvements in attainment in
GCSE English, Maths and Science.
'Becoming'Webwise'
for adults: the highly innovative, on-demand, multimedia package for training
in internet skills, leading to a Level 1 qualification through a range
of awarding bodies.
Beyond that,
further packages will be produced in line with Education Action Zone targets
including pre-school learning with the Tweenies; primary school literacy
and numeracy in Words and Pictures; and adult Basic skills materials to
support learning for the National Tests.
Working with
research organisations the results of the BBC Headstart trial in Hull
will inform both the BBC and local learning organisations in Hull on how
best to help learners in the City – and will assist in constantly improving
learning methods and practices.
