Transform a kitchen and dining area into a bright, light and colourful space by combining the vibrant flavours of Mexico with contemporary furnishings.
A large dining table and cosy wood-burning stove become the focus of the house. In the kitchen, buff limestone is used for the floor and worktop and bespoke white units are jazzed up with painted front doors

Mixing paints
If you cant find a colour you like, try mixing up your own paint and take it to a specialist paint manufacturer, who will scan it in to a computer and blend it for you. |

Flooring
Choose buff limestone for the kitchen floor and tile the skirting area. If laying tiles in a room, use under floor heating to keep the room warm in the winter months. It is easy to install and is very effective. |
|
|
|
Brighten up the kitchen
Use a pale base colour in the kitchen but brighten this up with splashes of pink. This will result in a colourful room throughout the year, without it being too over powering. |
|
|
|
Space saver
Often space is tight in kitchens and a good solution is to install a unit on wheels that can be moved in or out of the kitchen as required. This unit has been fixed to the wall with a large steel pole, which lets the unit swing around. |

|
|
Kitchen features
The plain white doors have been made more interesting by sticking sections of pink laminate in a square design on the door fronts. This can be effective if doors are being revamped rather than replaced. |
|
|
|
The kitchen area
Position the sink by the window to fit in the golden triangle rule of kitchens. This recommends that the sink, oven and fridge are all within easy reach of each other. |

|
The dining table
The contrast between the original stonework and the plastered walls enhance the Mexican feel. Make use of the space under stairs by turning it into a storage area. |

Top Tip |
|
|
Dont worry about colours and whether they complement each other or not. Think about foods and good taste combinations. These colours should work together. For example, strawberries do not taste good with lime and these colours do work well together. |
|
|
Neutralise bright colours by adding a small amount of green. To give your walls a slightly textured feel, mix some artex into the paint. |
