Walls, ceiling and woodwork
Strip, sand and wash all surfaces, then fill any holes and sand until smooth. Paint the ceiling in a pale blue emulsion, and paint the woodwork in a powder blue, water-based eggshell. Paint the walls in darker blue, water-based eggshell. |

|
Floor coverings
Tile the lounge end of the room in 33cm (13in) square, black ceramic tiles and finish with a black grout. Using a specialist, double stick underlay, fix a large, basket weave carpet down to prevent it from moving. |
|
|
|
Lighting
Hang four, large, black drum lightshades as low as possible from the ceiling. Fit MDF plinths in each window and place a grand table lamp on each one. Make 3D shelves from veneered MDF and fit a thin strip light to each. Place each side of the fireplace. |
|
|
|
Large, white, box coffee table
Sand and smooth the edges of an MDF coffee table and paint in white filler basecoat. Sand the first coat back, then apply a water-based white eggshell using a sponge roller. Lastly, apply matt clear varnish with a roller and place a sheet of glass on top. |
|
|
|
Shelving and plinths
Make a two-sided shelf (top and face) from dark, walnut-veneered MDF. Place MDF L-shaped brackets on the wall along the length of the shelf. Make elegant plinths to stand in each window, sand back the corners and attach skirting board to the base of each. |
|
|
|
Curtain rails and mirrors
Buy a chrome dowel the size of the window, and large acorn-shaped wooden finials, with holes drilled in the bottom. Apply a copper undercoat to the finials, sponge a darker blue on top, then sponge on silver leaf. Repeat with the mirror frames. |
|
|
|
Curtains and upholstery
Use a silk velvet fabric for the curtains, and clip-design, chrome-effect eyelets. Add adaptable sofas in the lounge area that can be positioned straight, L-shaped or as single armchairs. Choose a soft, camel-coloured, nubuck fabric to go with the scheme. |
|

|
Battle of Waterloo artwork and text
Enlarge zoomed-in photographs of uniforms to fit the required space, and set into oversized, black, lacquered frames. Ask a specialist to transfer the required text onto adhesive-backed vinyl, and apply it to the walls either side of the fireplace. |
