Space saving desk
Get the most from the dark space under the stairs by turning it into a simple, compact area to study. A hard wood, custom built desk spanning the width of the alcove makes it a perfect place for the computer.

Colour scheme
If you're feeling brave, use a strong colour throughout an open plan space, like a living/dining area. One colour will unite the two rooms and if you add a touch of cream to alcoves it will add interest and dimension.
No living room feels complete without a focal point like a fireplace, but for the optimum effect there's nothing like a stove to inject a feeling of warmth and homeliness. Mount on bed of bath hearth stone to complete the look.

If you're doing any DIY, keep a look out for original features hidden around the home. Alternatively, you could create some interest of your own by adding a porthole to a flat stud wall.
Top Tip

Brigid says, always sand woodwork before repainting. Don't adopt the 'can't be bothered' frame of mind, if you don't sand the paint will just sit on the surface and easily peel off.

Julian says, to create a round corner with fresh wet plaster, just drag a piece of heavy duty plastic bag down the edge, this should leave a smooth even finish.
