Whether you live in the town or the country, a warm and cosy kitchen is high on many people's list of essential facilities for the home. To get the traditional country look, think wooden furniture, wood-burning cookers and butcher's block.

Walls
Paint the walls in the kitchen pale green. This will compliment the rich colour of the wooden kitchen cabinets. To add a spash of interest to the walls, attach antique looking tiles in lines and blocks to sections of the walls. |

Kitchen cupboard doors
A cost-effective way to change the look of a kitchen is to simply revamp the existing units. Wooden doors that are covered with old paint can be transformed by taking them to a commercial dipping yard for caustic stripping. |

|
|
Butchers block
Use reclaimed timber planks to construct a butcher's block, which can double as a table. Create a drawer for knife storage and a wine rack section. |
|
|
|
Pot rack
Thick dowels or broom handles, inset in timber end frames, can be used to create hanging storage. Hang the rack from the ceiling using black iron chains and use butcher's meat hooks to suspend the pans from the dowels. |

|
|
Lighting
Place low voltage halogen spotlights over key kitchen work areas, to provide adequate task lighting. |
|
|
|
Curtains
At the window, hang bamboo blinds. To give the window a traditional feel, position a green gingham pelmet along a curtain rail. |

|
Shelves
Update tired shelves by positioning carved fretwork along the outer edge of each shelf. Paint pale green to match the walls. |
|
|
|
Accessories
Complete the look with traditional kitchen accessories such as these old fashioned weighing scales. |
