Give your living room a relaxed modern feel with this textured natural look. A textured aubergine wall next to bamboo effect wallpaper, natural looking furniture and an Ottoman style table complete with a funky wheat grass panel.

Coloured and textured walls
Start by applying textured plaster to the main wall in your room using a roller. When it is nearly dry, use a plastic blade to smooth off the face for a stone look finish. Cover the rest of the walls in the room with bamboo effect wallpaper. |

|
Shelves
On either side of the chimneybreast, construct chunky low shelves from reclaimed pine floorboards. Treat these with a dark oak aging wax to give a sealed finish. |
|
|
|
Subtle lighting
Fit recessed chrome halogen up-lighters into the shelves. These will give the room a warm look and accentuate the shelving. |
|
|
|
Table
Use reclaimed timber to construct a 4ft by 2ft Ottoman style table. Try and salvage legs from an old table or from a junk shop to give the table an authentic look. |

|
|
Wheat grass
Divide the table into three sections. Use the middle section as funky wheat grass panel. Cover the two outer sections with foam to give a soft upholstered look.. |

|
|
Comfy cushions
Cover the sofa in soft cream material. Make cushion covers out of cream cotton drill and silk and pile them up for a homely look. |
|
|
|
Fire surround
Cover an unattractive fireplace in fireproof MDF and paint to match the cream furniture. Be sure to reattach the metal surround next to the fire itself for safety reasons. |
|
|
|
Windows
Attach bamboo blinds to the window to fit in with the wallpaper. Customise simple cream tab top curtains by adding a strip of aubergine coloured fabric a third of the way up. |
