This story was submitted to the People’s War Site by Jenna Benson, for Three Counties Action, on behalf of Pam Cull, and has been added to the site with her permission. The author fully understands the site’s terms and conditions.

My Father and my Mother’s oldest brother who was serving in West Africa both got leave together and came home to stay with my Mum. Because of rationing she had a recipe for a cake using liquid paraffin instead of butter or margarine. As a celebration she baked this cake with of course predictable results, both my Dad and my Uncle spent the rest of their leave on the toilet!
