After the crossing of the Sangro and Rubicon rivers the German Army fled in panic towards Austria. The 1st Kensington Regiment, part of the 78th Division were one of the leading machine gun companies.
During a lull in the fighting A Company were given the task of rounding up German Deserters. Looking into a printeres workshop, my friends were surprised to see a printing press still in motion but without paper. Round the walls of the room were stacked thousands of packets of one thousand lire counterfeit Occupation Currency notes. The Germans hoped to distribute these counterfeit notes and generate confusion and unrest.
The desire to pocket some of this money was obviously very great. The town major was informed and a huge bonfire was held.
