I was born in Lincolnshire, which is a very flat part of the country and so most of the bomber-bases were based there. I was eight or nine at the time of this event that has really stuck in my mind. Every night when I was visiting my grandmother — I remember her counting out the bombers every night… and counting them in in the morning. And she knew where they were from. She used to say how many were missing. I was particularly distressed one day this bomber crashed into the field next to the house. And I remember everyone in the family —uncles and aunts, running over trying to save what ever remains there were but in fact when we got there the ammunition was exploding and all the crew … were dead.
