I was standing at the front door of my grandmother’s house in Canal Terrace when I saw three planes come over and drop their bombs. We heard the explosion when they landed on the Hall Russell Shipyard. We saw the injured people and felt lucky it wasn’t us. We had an air-raid shelter out the back of our house where we would go when the sirens went off. Another day I was walking on Links Road in the early morning on my way to work at the City Hospital when the promenade was bombed. The night of the Aberdeen Blitz I was on my way home to Bannermill Street after the dancing at Locarno in George Street. It was the night of the worst bombing in Aberdeen and I walked past the worst of the damage. It was where the Bon-Accord Shopping Centre is today. I lost friends who lived there that night. On VE Day we lit a bonfire on the Broadhill and walked from there up to the Harbour. It was pouring rain and freezing cold. We danced a huge Eightsome Reel at the top of Market Street where the traffic lights are today, there were hundreds of us. The atmosphere was just wonderful.
